Limited Slip Diffs

Postby MinorMatt » Sun Apr 19, 2015 3:57 pm

Guys I've got a choice...

Do I put a plate type or quaife atb in my LWB 150 high top?

Its mainly going to be road use... but will be camperised so may end up on some muddy fields.

Any thoughts?

ATB type much nicer to use as a 'road' vehicle, much more subtle take-up when tyre slip starts.

I'm not sure how they manage high torque demands like you get from a low revving diesel, but they seem popular with the off-road types.

I'm not talking about buying one. I already own an atb and a plate diff...

Hi Matt,

I would go for the Quaife diff. I have had Salisbury clutch plate L.S.D.'s on various rally cars over the years and they have all clattered and graunched when turning on tarmac, even with the special oil in the axles (smells like cat's pee!).

You have to be careful if you are on a lane and you put one rear wheel on the grass as the car/van will dive for the ditch as the wheel on the tarmac grips and the wheel on the grass doesn't. Quite exciting if you are not expecting it. I did like the viscous diff(s) I had on a Sierra 4X4.

Timbo.
