OBD Tool and Laptop Software

Postby StevenMurray » Sun Apr 19, 2015 4:08 pm

Can someone recommend a tried and tested ODB solution? Something that will reliably allow me to check fault codes (and clear them?).

Preferable on the low price end of the scale.

Many thanks in advance. :)

You won't get a lower price than a FREE download. :D

I don't have a Mk6 but the sample picture shows a 2000 MY Mk6. 8)

OK, I bought a cheap ELM Interface off fleabay and seem to be unable to get it to work. It comes with a CD with all the drivers and a copy of ForScan. After installing the drivers and the software on my laptop then connecting the ELM Interface, I'm unable to get a connection to the van. The ELM Interface shows up as Com4 in the Device Manager and the PC says the device is operating correctly, but the Forscan software can't see it.. I've taken some screenshots as below:

The unit I've bought is this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181331159561? ... EBIDX%3AIT

I'm just concerned at this point as to whether my van is ODBII or just ODBI. Could that be the problem? But if that's the case, shouldn't the software still recognise the ELM, just not connect to the van???

This is an ELM 327 adapter....

ELM 327.JPG

The F-Super you have has either been modified to replicate an ELM or it won't work with FORScan. :(

In Device Manager set the "bits per second" to 38400.

In FORScan, set the "COM Port" to AUTO, and "Baud Rate" to AUTO....it should check all open ports for a recognised adapter.

Bear in mind that you are unlikely to receive a "genuine" ELM chip in anything you buy off gay-bay....they are all made in China clones....fake....not the real deal.

FORScan is looking for an adapter that reports as an ELM, regardless of it being a genuine ELM chip or not. Is there any other software on the disc? the adapter you have should work with Formidable....another FREE download just not as good as FORScan. :D

EDIT: No, your Mk6 is NOT OBDII compliant, FORScan has been compiled to use an ELM on a Mk6....F-Super uses Formidable on a Mk6.

IT WORKS!!!!

The seller sent me a replacement in case it was the ELM. Changed the unit out and now have access to the van with ForScan. :) Happy Days. :)

Thanks everyone. :)

I just got one of these:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mazda-Ford- ... 2749.l2649

Comes with the latest Forscan and the relevant drivers on a CD too....works on my Mk7....did a pump, pilot and injector learn on it yesterday...no issues at all.

Also have one of these which works well:
