Mk6 spare wheel - how to wind down the carrier???

Postby firewalker » Sun Apr 19, 2015 8:51 pm

How does this thing wind down???
I took out the anti-theft bolt in the rear valance and shone a torch inside to see what I'm dealing with and am still none the wiser.
I don't have the wheelnut brace just the jack and winder in the toolkit, and I understand it is the brace I need to wind it down but surely something else can be used until I get my hands on one?

Thanks in advance...

The other end of the wheel brace has a flat taper on it much like a very big screwdriver, you need something that shape, a cold chisel with some grips would do it if it's the right taper. Anti-Clock lets the wheel down.

Many thanks - I have tried a Mk5 brace with has a plastic tipped flat end like a big screwdriver which sounds like what you describe but still no joy.
From what I could see there is no slot? More like a circular rim to a hole with what appears to be the flat end end of something metal filling it.

Any help appreciated, thank you.

Mk 5 brace has a square end, not flat, it's totally different.

MK 6 and 7 is like a giant flat head screwdriver about 20mm wide and 5 mm thick

You could use a piece of flat bar, bend it at about 500mm to create a handle

Thanks Ake, I have tried the flat end of a crowbar but it doesn't seem to hook up with anything.
Looking into the hole it looks like something is sealing the thing off! Clean and metal looking, I wondered if it sprung in under pressure but not being able to see in there when trying to insert things not designed for the job doesn't help.
I may try to get something together to the dimensions you have given may thanks for that.

Have you opened the door and removed the security bolt that blocks the hole

The vertical security bolt is removed and what I see through the hole facing me looks a lot like this:

3rd pic from the left. Looks like a lock of some sort?

Thanks for the feedback!!!

Just unbolt it from the rear crossmember theres 3 or 4 bolts holding it on the back then you can get a better look at it

I've figured out that a hexagonal socket is needed, if anyone has one that they could give me the dimensions for so I can just get some hexagonal bar or a bolt head to it I'd be very grateful!

Find a bolt then clamp it in a drill with forward and reverse
