can this be chain tensioner or something else too?

Postby Marco85 » Fri May 15, 2015 7:59 pm

Hello,everyone.
im in panic,my 2004 swb 2.0td 85 yesterday twice developed sudden rattling noise after startup which went away after couple of hundreds yards and later come back and did not go away so van is parked now and ive got weekend to sort it out.
first i suspect chain tensioner, but could it cause it to be intermitent? As first 2 times rattle come up for about 500yards and vent away as nothing would be wrong and now its permanent.
when on idle, its seems to run ok,no noise,as long as i accelerate, move off it sounds like terrible old diesel noise, like old diesels pre 1900 with 300k miles on it,mine is just 140k miles.
sounds like there would be handfull of bolts thrown into engine and its louder when under acceleration, like if i slowly picked up speed and cruised in 3rd gear or going downhill it would almost. Go away but as long as i use some power its realy bad.
i need to get part tomorrow before 5,wondering if that is defo chain tensioner or something else could cause it too.

Is it diesel knock?
Could be a knackered timing solenoid

Sounds like bad timing, like top end rattle, quite sharp and sounds like engine could fall apart in pieces,i will try to get video and upload to youtube and post link.
i think i can hear chain rattling too,but not too sure.
wondering if tensioner can cause intermitent rattle,if so i think it gonna be tensioner as i suspected its on its way anyway.
thanks

Just found video that has same rattle as mine and is low on power too,not only rattle,it would even stall if i tried to pull off as usual, need extra acceleration.
when it happened first 2 times after rattle stopped power came back as normal,no issues whatsoever it worked like before, then after few startups it developed rattle again and in less than 500yards it just vent away, now on a third time it stayed on for a mile till i drove home, tried to start 2 more times and its still rattles.

Definately timing solenoid, which was dying and is now dead!
