low power

hi all am looking to find if anyone can help me
i am chasing another van it is turbo diesel 97 auto
the red engine light in dash stays on and can only
get 80 kmh at the most and it is very sluggish at that
any help would be appreciated

It needs the fault codes read, it's in limp mode.

Could be a worn timing belt, or a failing stop solenoid or a different fault

Sadly, DIY Code readers won't communicate with this EPIC system, you'll need someone with a Lucas Laser 2000 code reader.
As Ake has said, it may be worth changing the timing belt, carefully, using proper timing pins, because worn belts can cause these to go in to Limp Home mode.
Unless the belt is already new, these engines always run better after a belt change anyway :)
