LEAKING FUEL DIESEL TANK. 2003 mk6 SWB FWD.

Postby mtbcol » Wed Jul 29, 2015 6:54 pm

Hello all

I have been a p***k and screwed into the top of my fuel tank, (fitting internal ply floor) well at least I think it was me as it wasn't leaking before.

Can this be repaired or would it be safer/better to fit a new one? If I cant find a new one, will a mk7, or any other one fit?

Is it an easy job to change, or do you think a trip to my local garage would be better? £££££££££££ :(

Thanks
Stupid Colin

Carefully enlarge the hole in the floor and put a pop rivet in to seal it, it will seal it tight.

My old mk6 had a hole in it when I removed the old ply, must have been like that since it left ford! I just put a bigger screw back in and it was fine for 2 years

Hi Punto

Thank you. So just remove the screw that I think I have screwed into the tank, make the hole in the ply floor bigger, and the hole metal van floor? so I can put a rivet in the hoIe made in the tank. Have I got that right? OR remove the screw that made the hole i the tank and put a bigger one in? Just wondering why the screw that made the hole didnt also seal it up?

Anyway, thanks again, i'll pluck up courage to do one of he above, as I dont' suppose can make it worse (can only fill it to just under half ful before it leaks.

Cheers

Colin. :(

I can't see how a hole in the top of the tank will leak when less than half full.
Also you must have used long screws to reach the tank.
I would change the tank as it is unlikely to be able to make it leak-free with
a pop-rivet or a patch.
I have a good tank available if you want it for £25.

Hi Captain hook

Maybe I didn't make the hole after all and its just another fault that the seller hid from me :x .

Anyway, I would like the good tank, but not sure if I have the time, skills, equipment etc. to remove the old one and fit the replacement myself. Do you know roughly how long it would take to carry out the above, so I can estimate a rough cost at the local garage? Also not sure when I wold be able to pick it up?

I would prefer a sound tank than a repaired one to be honest.

Colin.

We can supply and fit the tank for £55 while you wait.

Should take about an hour and a half.

Didn't realise you were a garage.

That sounds great, do you work Saturdays, as this would be the only time I could get to you?
