1996 VF Transit eak on rear diff oil seal G type axle

Hi. Have noticed an oil leak/ weep from the rear 'G' type axle, currently travelling around Australia so hard to find reliable mechanics and not much cash available! Need to do another 15000 miles in it - is this weeping normal? Leak doesn't appear to be significant - would you spend the dollars to confirm the state of oil level? Thanks in advance.

Update/ Haynes manual lists job as 'advanced' so sounds expensive. Can't find tool to remove the oil level fill plug yet, looks like a 10mm square hole - unusual? Trying to find something to open with. Is topping up oil acceptable?

3/8" drive ratchet or knuckle bar will do the job to get filler plug out.

If it's only a small weep, oil level should be ok but best to check to make sure....but a leak will only get worse, you should get it sorted as soon as practical. The oil will eventually contaminate the brake shoes and you'll have to replace them too. Yes topping up is ok. Your beast is close to 20 years old so the seals will be getting a tad hard with age. It's done well to get this far.

The pinion seal is a long way from the shoes mate!

95% of diffs have a weep... unless its actually dribbling out just check the oil level every few thousand miles

Fair point Matt, I didn't pick up on that ....he did say "leak from rear G type axle" though....so I just assumed axle...maybe I should just get back under the house now
