Timing Solonoid / Fuel Pump problem.

Postby neilmac1210 » Tue Aug 04, 2015 12:29 pm

Hi guys.
Firstly, I'm not mechanically minded so go easy on me.
Last week I put my '02 2.4 Transit in to the garage and had the timing solonoid replaced. All good, worked fine for 2 days. Drove 150 miles, stoping and starting no problem. The van sat for 2 days and no won't start. Turns over but wont fire. Called out the AA who said he thinks the fuel pump isn't running therefore no fuel getting to the engine. He didn't look at it for very long.
I'm on holiday, its a camper van, clearly I have problems.
What Im keen to find out from any of you is whether this fuel pump problem could have been caused by the mechanic replacing the solonoid? Is it a coincidence? Is there anything else I could check which might be causing this problem?
Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

Do you mean the AA guy? Who wasn't actually AA, he was a local mechanic sent on behalf of the AA. He didn't plug anything in, he poked around the fuel filter while I turned the ignition on and off, then he said the pump wasn't working.

Certainly seems that way to me. My van is older than he was.
Is definitely seems that no fuel is getting to the engine. Could it be some kind of connection between the solonoid and the pump that isn't connected properly? Anything that might need tightening, hit with a hammer etc?

If the solenoid was incorrectly fitted, could that stop the fuel pump from working? I tried push starting the van and it almost sounded like it wanted to fire but alas, nothing.

These pumps don't always work for very long after replacing the solenoid, most people seem to replace the whole pump, for reliability

Having said that, until someone reads the fault codes, then you're going to be second guessing everything

Ah I see. Makes sense I guess. Thanks for the info.
Struggling to get it into a garage at the moment as we're in the middle of the Scottish Highlands, but we're still trying.

It's not easy, I'm in a town, and can't find anyone who knows anything about Transits, and that's including the Ford dealer
I don't know if anyone on here is near to you with IDS, because not much else reads the older Mk6's :|

So, after a nightmare few days, 2 mechanics looking at it and who knows how many phone calls, we managed to find someone to tow the van 150 miles home so I could get it into the garage where the original work was done. Sure as sh*t, it started first time once off the tow truck. But, it kept cutting out. Ran a diagnostic which showed a problem with the immobilizer.
My new question is, is this just a coincidence or could replacing the solenoid have had any effect on the immobilizer?
I don't really believe in coincidences, but I also know jack about vans.

The immobiliser is built into the back of the injection pump on these TDDi engines, and a couple of the experienced guys on here say that it's the first sign of the pump failing :( :( :(

Ah, so we're back to the pump again.
I'm waiting till Monday when their specialist runs a more detailed diagnostic. They said it could possibly be the key I have that is dodgy. I'm clutching at straws now I know, but I don't really fancy replacing the pump.
Thanks for all the advice guys.
