Leaky rocker cover....easy job?

Postby Rmendelow » Sat Aug 29, 2015 7:42 pm

Hi, I've looked around on the forum but can't find any details on how to chance my rocker cover gasket. There's always been a bit of oil seeping out of it but suddenly the usual little dot on the ground after I stop has got a lot bigger and the side of the engine is very oily.

It's a 1999 smiley 2.5 diesel, not turbo.

I dont have a lot of experience or special tools. Is it something for a pro or a DIY job? Looks like I have to remove a load of bits to get it off...

Can anyone give me any pointers?

Thanks!!!

Piece of cake, 10 bolts arond the cover, a socket set is best, remove the EGR pipe which runs across the top & it's off, be careful putting it back, don't push the gasket out of place right at the back when re fitting the cover.

Great, I don't need a torque wrench or anything? Just do them tight? And I see I can buy a cork gasket with sealant or a rubbery plastic one. Which is best?

You sure it comes out from under all that stuff that is connected to the upper (inlet?) manifold? Without removing anything else? It looks tight.

Whatever gaskets on there now replace with the same, the rubbery one is meant to be reusable Using a torque wrench wont hurt

Cork ones work best

If you have the bananna manifold you will have to unbolt the passenger side

May as well clean the bannana maifold while it's off and blank the EGR if not done so.

From memory i'm pretty sure i once removed the rocker cover on my old banana engine without removing the manifold using a 1/4 wrench, was a bit fiddly but doable.
