How are you planning on painting rattle cans or spray gun, first and most important remove all rust, bare metal etch primer then take your time with normal primer fill and sand the areas so you have a nice smooth surface apply primer slowly building up the coats remember to light sand between coat, when your satisfied with the results its time for colour coats built up slowly and sanding between and finally clear coat again building up slowly then when dry use rubbing compound to shine up. This is not exact but a rough idea of the way I have done vans in the past.prep is everything so don't rush.

It can be done either way have you got anywhere big enough inside to paint the van as its sods law as soon as you want to paint the wind will blow lol, I buy project packs of wet and dry sand paper between coat I use between 400-800 grit sand paper used wet. Rust removal I use either wire brush on a drill or a flap disc on an angle grinder, when its colour coat I use a 800-1000 grade sand paper used wet. I did have a Haynes manual for car body work that was very useful think amazon have books on how to paint a car. Also panel wipes or pre paint is needed for cleaning the body between coats and tac cloth for catch grit and dust. The longer you take preparing the better the finish. N.

Nice looking van I don't blame you for doing more research I don't think the books on amazon were too expensive I am ordering one on airbrushing. I painted my first car in the 90s with rattle cans. I have seen some terrible rush jobs that people have done and think why did you bother plus some professional vehicle painters have the attitude "well its only a van". Good look and post some pictures of the work. N.
