Fuel pump problems with my 1997 2.5 turbo transit

Postby martin coombes » Wed Apr 27, 2016 12:56 pm

I have been told by my local garage that the fuel pump on my 1997 2.5 turbo transit is faulty and can't be replaced as it is obsolete. The fault was picked up on a service. I hadn't noticed anything wrong myself. Apparently, revs are erratic and diagnosis by a specialist shows the pump or activators are at fault. He has suggested changing the activators but that may not solve the problem. (about £120 if both activators need changing. Alternatively, the fuel pump could be changed to a Bosh mechanical version for about £400 but the turbo would not work with the bosh pump. (I'm not sure if that would be new or reconditioned) I was so confused I forgot to ask! I would like to keep the van going as I have owned it for about 13 years and because it is a motor home it still has good resale value.
I don't know what to do for the best so I hope someone can give me some advice. Martin.

Yes idle on EPICs can be erattic -its nothing to worry about.

If you haven't got the management lamp on then it isn't faulty. It needs an Idle trim learn using a lucas laser 2000 diagnostic scanner... not parts replacing. A lumpy idle is a minor annoyance, it isn't symptomatic of failure (without eml) or parts that need replacing.

I suggest you tell the garage not to do anything, take it away and carry on enjoying using it... whilst looking for a garage that doesn't try and force work thats not required on to you.

Doesn't sound like much of a specialist either... did you get given any fault codes? You will be paying for them so you should ask for them.

£400 would probably be a second hand pump. The turbo would still work, but you will probably find it nosier and less economical (others will dispute this though)

Thanks MinorMatt. The management light is not on. I will ask for fault codes when I pick it up. We will be going on a European trip in the summer and I had visions of it packing in whilst in the fast lane of a German autobahn with a Porsche coming up from behind at 300kph. Could still happen anytime I guess but I've heard Porsches have good brakes. I shall take plenty of duck tape with me to repair the front end of the Porsche!! Fingers crossed I won't need it.
