mk 2 V6 stuttering

Postby davev6newman » Thu May 05, 2016 8:25 pm

I took my camper for new tyre recently, and it was holding back, stuttering on acceleration and stalling at idle.
Im thinking thats it carb problem so i gave it a good clean and blew jets etc, no difference. So i changed it for a new one. No difference, just the same, but was now idling lovely.

So im thinking the accuspark ign is playing up, i changed that and put new plugs leads cap and rotor on. No difference there either, changed coil and resister no difference.

Fuel supply? changed pump, nope, no difference. checked timing, 6deg, thats fine.
its ticks over lovely, rev it up, sweet as a nut, but take it down the road and it hesitating and coughed and kangarooing up the hill.

im stumped now. Any ideas?????

I am finding that the pinto now it's been uprated breaths really heavily, have done a Pcv bypass but that's had it owns design issues. I don't know if the v6 has a similar setup but might be worth a check and clean if you haven't already...

Dunno what manual you are using Dave but 6 btdc is exhaust valve knackering territory. they like to be run a tad rich rather than a tad lean also dude.

I'm looking at ford workshop manual for v6 3.0ltr low compression.
My camper is a factory fit v6 but got a chequered history so engine numbers not visable any more. 38 dgv carb.
Thing is, it's run on 6 deg for 3 years now and always run fine, but this stuttering has just started and I've made no a just ment to timing.
I know granada shows 14 deg tdc in manual and I'm only assuming mine is low compression cause it's factory.

yeah, mines lc in the amby and i've got the 79 onwards mk2 workshop manual and the 6 btdc figure is an engine/distributor assembly figure, i also have a granada manual, anyway i time engine and set carb with vacuum gauge. petrol today is shite also. when i check ignition setting with strobe after setting with vacuum gauge it is between 12 and 13btdc at idle with disconnected vacuum.

could also be a dodgy ht lead from coil to distributor (my first port of call for symptom described) or distributor weights/springs worn or unlubed or float in carb sticking/contaminated etc..last oil/filter and air filter change? condenser, lt leads etc. inlet manifold/carb air leak etc. fuel pipe leak etc.

Ok, every thing checked. No air leaks, no electrical issues. Carb fine, fuel fine. Then.... I'm thinking, ffs I changed valve stems oil seals late last year and I don't think I've used it since. What if I over tightened the tappets? That could lead to the juddering.
So I'm gonna check the tappet clearance again and was given a tip to tap the rocker head after tightening to make sure they are sitting even.

Reset the valve clearances to 0.012" inlet and 0.020 for exhaust cold. No difference. Ticks over and revs over like switch watch. Take it down the road and it's stuttering and kangarooing. Grrr.

Next test is compression.
Was working fine till I did valve stem oil seals.

Check the LT feed into the distributor, they can wear through and short on the casing.

Distributor 'timing' plate assembled correctly? Had a Mini that was missing a washer under one of the points plate screws - the screw stuck through far enough to earth on the advance flyweights .....
