Solid Fly wheel and new clutch instal problem.

Postby ian.welch.9404 » Thu Jun 09, 2016 2:42 pm

Hi All,

I have MK 6 2004 2.4 RWD duratorq tranny.
I was having starter issues so thought the DMF was on the way out.
So just to be sure i bought DMF, Clutch and new starter motor.
Sent the machine to the garage and when they stripped it down it has already been converted to a Solid Fly wheel.
So I got them to install another clutch instead which they supplied and a new slave cylinder. They also bled the Slave Cylinder.
I picked the van up and was surprised at how low the bite point was on the clutch.
As I was driving home I started having problems getting into 1st when i was at junctions, so much so I started off in 2nd.
By the time I got home I had problems with 1st and 2nd. Then also reverse when backing into the drive.

So the bite point is as soon as you lift the clutch and I'm sure when the clutch is fully down it is still driving the van forward.

I took it back and they bled the clutch again and they said no change, they also stripped down internally to check the linked but no obvious issue.

I am wondering if there are different clutches for DMF and SMF and they have installed the wrong one.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be?
I will be going back to them but want to have an idea what it could be.

cheers.

How was it with your old clutch?

Hi, this can happen when cheap reconditioned clutches or miss matched pressure plate and drive plate are fitted, next the garage will probably want to fit a new master cylinder, have they just changed the drive plate and used old pressure plate?
Your best to buy quality clutches like luk or valeo but you may need some measurements off the old clutch

The clutch is different for single mass,
When you do the conversion it comes as a full kit and it's important that the realease arm, bearing and slave cylinder are all a matched set also,
There is a 'flat' release arm (where bearing clips on) which uses a bearing with a ramp on the back to allow it to pivot,

Then a raised release arm, with a flat bearing,
These are both used with different slave cylinders also.
It's all relative to vehicle age and manufacturer of clutch assy (valeo or luk)

Put wrong stuff onto single mass, you'll get the poor biting point which will get worse really quickly till its undriveable or fails,

You'd be better matching part numbers from the drive disc removed if they still have it....

Whole kit for 140 quid.

Has anyone used him before and give any feedback?

They are actually from Turkey, not China.

If you can get a Valeo kit for £140 then I would go for that obviously

Your input is appreciated but nobody mentioned valeo at £140 if you bothered to look at the link properly you'd have seen the price of £209, at which I mentioned was a good price for valeo

Sorry if I missunderstood... I would not class that as not bothering. I thought a Valeo kit was being quoted for £140, which of course is an excellent price. So is £209 of course.

Thank you for pointing that out for me.
