Knock on cold start and "misfire"

Postby rizmo » Thu Jun 23, 2016 1:33 pm

My 1.8 TDCi Connect has a new problem for me. On cold start, there is a loud dull knock from the engine, and on pulling away the car exhibits a "misfire" and judders along, for about 200 yards, then it all clears and everything is fine from then on, until the next cold start. Could this be an injector starting to give up, or is it something even more complicated?

Had it checked by local diesel specialist, and he thinks it might be a sticking valve, that releases as it warms up. Before taking apart (!), he suggests some STP/Millers oil treatment and fuel treatment, which might clean the valves and stop the sticking one form sticking. If the snake oil woks, will have saved me a few quid, but if not, then spanners out time.

Highly unlikely to be a sticking valve, very rare if it is. Have you had codes read?? Had it on IDS?

Got it booked in for next week. Will leave it with them overnight, then they will check the codes on start up and cold running - nothing showing when I took it in Tuesday.

Sods law - took it for a run to Leicester, and next day there was no knock and no misfire! Did not do anything to it, no additives, just drove it. Will see if it starts up again, but so fat it's a cheap fix!

My old van use to run rough on cold start if I used supermarket fuel. Now I only use Shell and always put a measure of Millers in when I fill up.

Yes, last two fill ups were Morrisons finest, due to circumstances beyond my control (girlfriend driving), so will get some proper stuff in there asap.
