2007 2.4 oil pump gone?

Postby Firenza73 » Wed Jun 29, 2016 10:36 am

Hi Folks,
Just before I fit a new oil pump is there anything else that is a common fault I should look at first (bypass, clogged filter(replaced 6000 miles ago) etc)
Oil light came on today . I checked the level immediately found it was below the dip sick level. I filled it with a 1 ltr which should of brought it up to well above yesterdays level when the engine was fine(never looked at the dip stick) drove it 300 meters to the house and oil light failed to go off. I filled it to the top level on the dip stick at home and found oil light was still on and I can clearly hear it's running with no oil. Just looked at the Haynes Manual and can see it needs a lot of careful lining up when its being replaced so I just wanted to rule out other possibilities.
Thanks guys

Its probably to early... but there was/is a recall on mk7 oil pumps.

Put your reg into www.etis.ford.com and if it comes up as an outstanding item - Ford will replace the pump and any damage low oil pressure has caused

I "think" that was for the ~2012 Euro-5 jobbies Matt...although I stand corrected as usual.

If you can "clearly hear it's running with no oil", (knocking and/or rattling)....you've probably done the mains & big ends as well as the pump...hence why your oil light isn't going out after filling with oil....if this is the case, replacing the oil pump won't help I'm afraid. Turbo may well have suffered too.

If you've ran it at all with no oil pressure then you'll need more than just a pump I'm afraid, as Lord K said if you can hear it's running with no pressure then it's rebuild /replace engine time....
Out of curiosity what oil have you been using??

Thanks for all the feedback. Looks like it's a goner. As the sound is only what you would hear after an oil change for a second or two as the oil works its way round the engine I will give a new pump a try anyway, but you can expect an up date after I get back from holiday to say it's knackered. In reply to andz327 the oil was Chevron supreme 5w 30.
Thanks again for a quick response

Hi Andz237
Just had a look. It says " a synthetic oil" so I'm not sure but I assume that's semi. I only buy it as you can get it in 20ltr drums from Costco. I only do about 6k a year but the van had 100k in it when I bought it 2 years ago
I've never used any treatments.
I just did a lot of welding for the MOT then was about to get rid of all the rust spots and sell it so I think I'm of to BCA to get another van before I start a repair on this one.

Ok no probs, I was just wondering what caused your oil filter to be choked with only 6000 miles, mk7 should be fully synthetic,
A mk7 welded up for mot???
Sure your vans 2007??

Lord Knobrot

Correct, only applies to the 2.2 litre Euro 5 engines.

The mention of a choked filter was just me asking for suggestions. There was nothing to suggest that was an issue. But the welding yes it's 57 plate. I had an inner sill patched last year by the garage for the MOT and they issued a number of advisories I had a look underneath and the thin skim of underseal was hanging off all over the underneath. This year I welded pitches to the NS outer sill in two places and the drivers step was rotting through at a number of places so I had to fabricate some fancy repair sections. I agree with you -- welding a 2007!!! it's a bit unexpected.

Update. I have changed the pump and filter and i'm back to full oil pressure. Engine is running fine so fingers crossed. If anyone is going to do the same job watch for the plastic oil pressure sensor which sticks down in to the sump. I managed to snap mine when I slid the sump off.
Thanks for all the advice
