Differential advice

Postby AlisonBoo » Sat Jul 16, 2016 12:09 pm

Hi there.
Last night something inside my differential broke off and shot out the side of the housing.
I'm after advise as to what I'm looking for to replace it.

It's a horse box conversion (pic added) 2001 plate.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

I have no idea (can you tell!) where I would even start looking for one.
Living on the Isle of Wight probably isn't helpful either.

I know I need a twin wheel rear axle but what MK is my van? And is there anything else I need to know when looking for one?

Thanks.

It's a MK 6

And obviously it's a twin wheel axle

There may be an alloy tag on the differential cover (looks a bit like a frying pan on the back of the axle) giving the axle ratio. If you are happy with the way it goes up hills and down the motorway then get a replacement axle with the same ratio.

Yep think we found that.

New question though. On closer inspection the bearing has gone and a bearing has shot a hole in the access panel. Can we replace the bearing? Or is it still going to need a new axle?

Ok fingers crossed! Ordering new bearings in the morning. I have a mechanic luckily that uses my horse box.

If it all goes wrong I know now what I'm looking for axle wise I think ;)

Thank you all for your help I'll let you know how we get on!

You wont get away with one bearing ,theres four in there  Its something has made a break for freedom its best to replace the axle as everything inside will more than likely be in bits .

Ok well seeing as I'm on the Isle of Wight and it's going to take me a while to find a reconditioned axle and save the pennies (just spent a grand getting my car on the road) to purchase it. We may as well have a play about with what we've got ;)
