The fact it's rotten would support it being poor engineering!!! If it was well engineered it wouldn't be a rotten mess.
It's formed from flat plate, bent into open channel sections and spot welded together leaving gaping holes all over the place and then it's only painted on the outside. So when wet and sh*t gets in, which it will given the proximity to the wheel, it corrodes from the inside of the channels on the spot welds and bursts the outer paint. If it's gonna be fabricated that way then it needs to be galvanised or dipped in paint to coat the insides of the channels so they can take the wet and sh*t or if it's only gonna be painted outside then the channels need to be sealed so the water and sh*t can't get in.

That's a standard method of vehicle manufacturing init
Its too expensive to galv everything and who wants a van to last forever
Our reptilian masters wouldn't be happy about that consume or be consumed
Over.....

As a mk5 it's got to be pushing nearly 20 years old, some one on here was welding a van at 3 years old to get it through a test, I'd say it's done pretty well.

If you go back in time when mk1 transits and escort vans got to three years old most of them needed welding for first mot and in the scrap yard by six years old

hmm looks as bad as mine did, as said above cover sharp edges for mot, 30cm from seatbelt anchor or suspension mount will require work, just cut the rot out and put some new plate in :)

Mine rotted in pretty much the same places apart from my step (phew)

Although my arches were fubar

I have MOT tomorrow i'll let you know

My van is 10 years old and yet to find rust on it .
Body is quite normal to outlast the engine life ...but that's in Australia .

But rustproofing or undersealing weren't done on assembly you had to order it as an option on the transits, the ones that have survived seem to in the main have had some sort of treatment.

Looks like a good start!

mine failed MOT thursday as there was a small hole in both inner upper front arches, so might be worth checking in there too. As i completely missed them, Do you have a towbar fitted?

Cheers, Matt.
