Transit keys

Postby Beaker » Mon Sep 19, 2016 7:48 pm

I need a spare key for my Mk.7 - I have the blue remote fob key so a non-remote key would do. I also have the key code to get a replacement cut.

I've been quoted over £100 for a new key and programming from a local auto locksmith (which seems to be about the going rate), and £240 from my local Ford dealer.

I have read about programming a new key (the turning the ignition on and off 8 times trick). Is this really all there is to it?

I can buy a blue transponder key and get it cut much cheaper, but I'm worried about the programming bit of the equation. Does the turning the ignition on and off trick really program the new transponder to the locking, or is it just some sort of hack that is bypassing or turning off my security system? If it is, then I really don't want to go there.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can buy the key and get it cut by most key cutting places, but the programming of the fob transponder would need to be done using a computer connected to your com port. An auto locksmith may be able to do it, or anyone who has Ford IDS can do it as well.

You cannot program the remote locking using the ignition on-off thing, that only works on the Mk6 :(

Thanks for the replies - that's exactly what I needed to know. I'll call in the pros.
