New battery Gassing?

Postby Trannygrandad » Fri Jan 13, 2017 12:28 am

I had two new 85 amp batteries fitted to my tail lift-crane-winch-winch fitted bus
only a few weeks ago in Dec.
yesterday, lifted the battery cover & discovered the start of verdigree ( blue green YUK) on the + terminal, which to me indicates gassing

Q- is this the result of an overcharging prob?

Are the batts getting more charge in than they are are giving out?

is the voltage regulator or whatever modern replacement gismo now used, gone faulty

Any Sparks on here ?

Nothing, but there was only one, it was 11 years old, when I bought the bus in july it was fitted with a wheelchair tail lift. its previous use was private hire, so it did a lot of mileage, in relation to tail lift use.
But I may do only 10 or so miles a day & use the lift maybe up to 12 times. & when your disabled the last thing you want is a flat battery, especially in the cold of winter
As I also fitted a floor winch to anchor the scooter, fitted a crane in the side door as back up when cars parked so close behind I could not use the lift, which also used a 12v winch to operate.
So I fitted 2 x 85ah ones.
Question is
1 is the battery faulty? (note to self must check the terminals on the other battery)
2 are they overcharging?

they should,nt be over charging as the alltinater gives out less charge when batterys are charged up,maybe the split charger is faulty

Connect a volt meter to measure the voltage when running, it should be near enough 14.4v whatever is switched on. If it's more than that, then the regulator in the alternator may be faulty

Original battery by ford was one of their Silver Calcium ones which I understand was given a 'special ' charging system working at 14.8 v
but just now on tick over 850rpm? the meter read 14.53 v

Does that increase with revs, or is it pretty stable :?: If that's what it is, then it's about right 8)
 Maybe the battery is faulty, and it should really be a Silver Calcium replacement, (but not necessarily Ford!)
