fuel pressure relief valve

Postby Bertiemje » Tue Jan 17, 2017 6:09 pm

Hi all. just a quickie. I think my prv has gone, now i have read about how to check but what do i do if when i take it out it is gone? Will it go back in until i get the part and get it to Fords or do i put a new valve in and pray it doesn't pop on the way?

Just replacing the PRV may not help you... and could "pop" the new one straight away if the cause is not fixed...It's usually caused by a faulty SCV....! The PRV is there to help "protect" the other fuel system components.

What symptoms do you have??

erratic idle, unexplained loss of power feels like bad turbo lag cuts out at junctions. i was thinking i need to look at this first and have read about how to dismantle and the fact if it does need replacing it needs taking to ford for prv counter reset and a fuel pump learn. i just don't know what to do if i take it out and its knackered can i put it back in to get me to the garage for the repair.

Certainly sounds like the common SCV/PRV issue. Is yours the FWD or RWD. FWD is a lot easier to do as all the gubbins are right in front of you...the RWD is a ball-ache. With the resets & learns etc....there may be someone near you with IDS who could possibly help...whereabouts are you..!??

You can still drive it for a short while with a duff PRV....but it won't be happy. Pop the valve out, if it comes out in pieces, she's done.

yep, its the rwd :( I have spoke to a diesel specialist and told them my thoughts and they will do nothing without charging me £65+vat to put on diagnostics first because nobody can diagnose without going on a diagnostics then told me it was probably my injectors :x I'm located in Cardiff

No need to remove it. Just pull the fuel return line off the end, dry it out (the valve), stick some clean paper towel under it and crank the engine for a second. If any fuel comes out it's blown.

Yeah...you'll always bend over for getting plugged in...that's why a lot of us have our own IDS. Just two uses and it has paid for itself.

Cardiff eh..?? MJS is in Swansea...so not too far away, he may be able to help out... Loot is in north Wales so a bit far away. These guys have IDS and know how to use it.

From you symptoms the 1st thing to do is have the pump learns done and the codes read by someone that knows what they are doing - a 'specialist' may not

If the PRV is blown, just fitting a new one won't solve anything for very long, other than relieving your pocket of the price of another new one. They blow because something else has over pressured the rail - usually the SCV it seems.

Fit new Geeenooine Ford parts, from a Ford dealer if you want to be sure they are. Then the pumpearns and resets.

Usually a poorly injector will fail the pilot learns....can you do an injector leak-off test..?? This will give a fair idea of injector condition.

Even a PRV which is still in one piece can be faulty....we've seen it many times. Even brand new non-genuine ones don't work most of the time.

Sorry to drag up an old thread. New to the forum and my first time posting!
Ive just bought my first transit but it’s hunting already. I have a mate that plugged it in and it showed as a fault with the SCV/PRV.
I’ve looked on PF Jones and they’ve got the PRV for the 2.4 transits but the SCV says it’s only compatible with the 2.2/3.2’s.
Does anyone know if this will be ok for my van also?
I’ve no idea where these parts are located to replace once they arrive if someone can point me in the right direction?
I noticed on another thread that once the new ones are in it’ll need a “fuel/pump learn” is this pretty straightforward or will it need plugging in again?
Thanks gents!
