LED headlights bulbs-DON'T DO IT.

Postby Mike » Thu Feb 16, 2017 10:05 am

There have been a few threads here recently about the use of LED headlight bulbs, H7/H15 in the Custom and H4 in the MK6/7.

There has been ZERO positive feedback. Due to the way LED's work, there isn't (yet) a way of getting a decent beam in a reflector OR projector headlight unit.

Your legal options for decent MK6/7, Custom headlights are either Philips X-treme Vision/Racing Vision or Osram Night Breaker Unlimited/Laser.

Non legal options for the MK6 are an H4 HID kit from HIDS4U, this works very well. HID kits also give a very good beam in the Custom with projector lights (Trend, Limited and Sport), but later vans (2015 on?) seem to have issues with the BCM cutting power to the HID's.

MK7 lights don't give worthwhile results with HID kits.

There could be a light at the end of the tunnel for the MK6/7 and other H4 bulbs users though. Philips have developed an H4 led, the X-treme Ultinon LED, but it's not available in the UK yet. Don't confuse the genuine Philips LED offerings with the ones that use Philips LED chips, Lumiled for example ARE NOT Philips bulbs.

i did check out these http://www.horizonleds.co.uk/exterior-l ... 000-lumens which i have bought and fitted them - getting intermittent dipped beam fault and when i installed the separate decoders it made no difference

i've since turned the lamps 90 degree and now the left side is perfect . just need some minor adjustment to the right

until now i was using Osram night breaker and sometimes wasent sure if my lights were even on. On dark roads had to use main beam or supplement with the fogs.

In the last pic it looks like the hotspot is almost upside down? Can you spin the bulbs while they're in the light and switched on?

I noticed that too. Although no surprise as 6500K is daylight. (

Just a word of warning guys...

It seems that retro-fitted HIDs will me a MOT fail as of march/april this year. I don't think LEDs are yet - but its entirely feasable they will be in the not too distant future!

Also a word of warning regarding retro fitting led headlight bulbs,

They generate almost no heat and in snow etc, your vision can rapidly deteriorate as there is no heat to melt the accumulating snow.

As I found out the hard way! Having to stop on dangerous situations to clear it every few miles :?
