Rotten cross members and chasis

Postby glenbolton22 » Fri Feb 17, 2017 9:56 am

Hi everyone ,
I am a new member and i own a L reg transit derived welfair bus that i have turned in to a camper van.
I have just had it in for a MOT which it passed but i got an advisory on the cross members and the chasis being corroded so i got the welding done.
The lad doing the welding said i had 2 years maximum before their would be nothing left to weld, i really love this old girl and i can not bare the thought of taking her to the knackers yard.
So my question is , can the above mentioned be fixed , replaced , renewed and if so who can do it and roughly what would that set me back?
thanks in advance Glen

Well, generally, anything can be fixed with enough time and money, ideally you would cut out all of the rust and weld in clean new metal and then treat/protect the lot. Depends how badly rust has gotten hold of the Chassis. But it is a transit, so likelihood is that it has.

Any pics so we can see how bad it is??

The guy who carried out the welding said he thinks it might pass next year but definately not the year after , i have took it to a few garages and without looking at it they said it is something they would not get in to , too big of a job for them, i need some one who is prepared to take the job on and replace the chasis and all the cross members , some kind of specialist me thinks , i know the van is not worth it but my heart is in it , i am sure you will understand that. i will try to get pics but i am not sure what i would be looking at . i am no mechanic lol

congratulations on the MOT.
Why not get yourself a mig and go down the diy route next year.
You've got plenty of time to practice. :D
