EV Tranit Mk6 Upgrade to Zero Emisions

Postby trnsitvanman » Sat Mar 11, 2017 12:26 am

I know some will say Im mad but

I own a 75bhp Mk6 transit van
I intend to buy the parts I need from EV West in California USA
I have most of my plans ready and will be using 40x Voltronix 60 Ah Lithium 3.3v
Iron Phosphate Batteries in two banks where the gas tank goes each side underneath in custom made Aluminium battery boxes 20 per side giving 132v converted to AC current at 650Amps on full power but can change the power curve for economy as i only drive max 60mph,should get up to 200miles on a charge
I will be using the stock gearbox and will have to make a adaptor plate to attach it to the bell housing, and use the gearbox so i can select reverse. I can pull away in 3rd or 4th. I will be using the clutch assembly fitted.
it will have regenative braking because its an AC drive motor and simple to fit a brake line sensor to connect to the speed controller. And i can connect a pc and adjust and tweek the power settings

I need a electric pump for the power steering.
also need to sort the brake survo replacement.
I need a VXT75 bell housing cheap or free to make the motor mounting plate
How much in Kg does the 2ltr engine weigh not including the gearbox please

any help would be apreciated :D :)

Interested in this also...some of those electric motors have a serious amount of torque available...from zero rpm too..!

I rode an electric motorcycle last year and the torque it had from stand-still was mind blowing considering how small the motor was...

Not wanting to sound negative, but the chances of a home made electric vehicle achieving two hundred miles at sixty miles per hour is about as likely as your chances of winning the lottery without buying a ticket.
Spending a no doubt large amount of money converting a van that's about 15 years old strikes me as complete and utter madness

Most of the main stream conversions use a rwd van, and ditch the engine and gearbox.

But good luck!

Where did you get those numbers from..??

Using his numbers from the first post.... I get 132v x 650amps...= ~86kw..... Not bad...and considering the torque which would go with it, should make for an interesting project....

Why is he doing it..??? Because he can..

I get similar questions about my Jet powered Go-Kart....When I take it to car shows etc...many people ask me "why"....I just say..."because I can and it's different"....and then I say to them..."If it was just a normal piston engine type go-kart, you wouldn't be standing here talking to me.... you would probably walk straight past without a second thought"..

I was going to do something similar a few years ago with a VW T25 dokker ( pick up ) the batteries were more expensive and not as good then but the van was a lot lighter and did not need as powerful a motor .
But I was living in Spain and they don't let you modify vehicles at all there , I also doubt that you will get 200 miles from it but am prepared to be proved wrong . Keep us informed please with your progress

OP said 40 battery at 3.3v each that gives 132v , linked in series. Each batttery is 40 ah and since in series this is 40ah in total. So it's 132x40=8kw that's output over one hour.

i am with Altransit on this one.

The 40ah is a "capacity" rating, is it not??

Yes, but maximum output is directly related to this, as is capacity
