Dead 2.2 Transit - Suspect CPU

Postby Qwales » Mon Apr 03, 2017 10:42 am

Bought a 07 Roller team 500 which has 2.2 Deisel Transit front end. Took it away for a weekend and it was fine. Booked our summer holiday and just a few days before we left I tried to start the van in the drive and it started cutting out and then after an hour or so it stopped turning over at all. I had a home start guy look at it and checked out all the electrics which seemed Ok and also a guy who is a bit of a wiz with electronics put a dongle on the van and tried connecting using his mobile but it would not connect. He said this suggested the main computer might need replacing. I need to get the van working ASAP now winter is over, can anyone suggest the cheapest way I can get this done please? P.S. I replaced that grey block which the key slots in to so its not that.

I'd get that plugged into a proper diagnostic computer, ideally ids and get the codes read.

Could be a no. Of things, and guessing can be expensive.

What Punto said.....unless you know exactly what's at fault...it can be an expensive guessing game...BTW...they don't have a CPU as such..!

Throwing parts at it until it's fixed is a very expensive way to do things.

What is this "Grey block which the key slots into"..??

When you say it stopped turning over after about an hour, had you been trying to start it for that hour? If yes you've probably burnt starter out

Does it turn over but not start?
Is the battery fully charged?
If both answers are yes then I'd be tempted to try a crank sensor, but really it needs proper diagnosis using Ford IDS, not a generic code reader

Thanks for the replies, didn't think anyone had as I didn't get an email notification.

Yes it is the ignition barrel as shown in the above pic. I did quite a bit of poking about on the web after the home start guy told me that these often go faulty so I thought for the price it was worth a shot.

Dont think I burnt out the starter, the van was starting and then cutting out after 30 seconds or so. It become more and more difficult to start it and then nothing, not even a click.

There are no new lights on the dash when you turn the ignition on. Although there is a message about door being open and a red flashing led which I guess is part of the alarm and I can operate the electric Windows once it is on. Engine wise there is no noise at all when I turn the key in the ignition and no ignition console lights.

It's a bit much to tow and I guess would cost a bomb to have put on a Lorry and taken to Ford just for a test. I assume there are guys who will come out and put it on the IDS tester?

The home start guy spent hours checking every fuse. I never realised how many there were.

Does anyone know someone near Cardiff with a tester or will it have to be towed to Ford?
