MK3 diesel starting gremlins

Postby hendsford » Thu Apr 06, 2017 4:36 pm

It's doing my head in I tell you !!. Van started and ran great and I ran around in it, and then, I turned it off. Go to restart it and nothing happened !. I sat there waiting for the AA trying to start every 5 mins or so, still nothing . After about an hour I tried it again, and magically it started and off I went !.

The battery is ancient so I changed it and cleaned up all the electrical connections thinking that may be the cause.

Again,it started fine . Turned it off, same bloody thing happened.

I'm baffled, help.

If starter is not turning over get a 3foot long pice of wire put a female spaded end on one end and bear the outer end then on the starter motor remove the small energising wire off the starter and plug on the wire you have made up on the terminal then turn on ignition make sure it is out of gear and then flash the bear end on the positive battery terminal if starter works ok then you have a fault on starter circuit if it does not start or turn over and the battery is good it's the starter.

Hi, The batter is new. I tested the thin wire that goes to the starter solenoid. When I turn the key I get 12.5v on the wire to the solenoid. Engine fired three times on the trot. On the fourth and the ten attempts after that, nothing at all happened.

Starter Motor ?

If you get 12v on the solenoid wire even when it doesn't start then it's probably starter motor.

If you don't, it's probably a worn ignition switch.

I would put good money on it being starter motor. Depending on how it 'lines up' after you use it as to whether it works next time.

yeah, when I turn the key there's 12.5v going into the solenoid, but nothing happens :(. Starter motor it is then.

Cheers all :). Yep it was the starter motor. £137 for a Bosch starter from Europarts and we're back up and starting. Just a clutch and timing belt to do now :/

Just for future discussions on starter motor searches ...

Just looking at the starter problems on transits and looking at diagrams etc etc is it not pointless replacing the whole starter motor as it seems 99% of the time its just the solenoid and that seems to be the problem on most of the starting problems. The rest of the motor is all mechanical and unless the teeth or similar broken it's the solenoid that's at fault.

Starter motors complete are expensive...

Solenoids are less than £20

Please correct me if wrong, most on here know far more than I ...
