Bumper paint or dye?

Postby vampirequeen » Mon Apr 10, 2017 1:00 pm

Just finished painting our van and now want to freshen up the bumpers. Is it better to use bumper paint or dye?

Depends what colour and finish your after. Acrylic paint will stick on plastic easy or use primer if you wanna match the vehicle colour

Smooth Hammerite. I used a brush because I don't have the skills to spray and although not at shiny as sprayed it's still a good result.

I just want to take the bumpers back to the original black. She's an old van (Y reg) and they've faded in places.

A good quality liquid shoe polish is a easy simple one.
There's a few treads on here about using a hot air gun and peanut oil iirc

Clean it, mask off any areas you don't want painted, primer and paint. If you cock it up, rub it back and start again

Thanks for the replies.

I'm a bit nervous about using spray paint because there are often other cars (not ours) parked near the van and I'm worried the wind might carry the spray. Some of our neighbours are iffy about our Y reg van being parked near their 66 plate cars anyway (snobby area) so we can't risk any accidents. Not everyone hates her. Some would love to do what we've done and have the freedom to go away whenever we choose but they're far less vocal than the Transit haters :(

I'm thinking of using Rust Oleum universal paint. It seems work on just about anything. Then I'll get a good polish/ restorer for the dash and interior trim.

TBH, you can buy a brand new 3 piece front bumper for under £40

By the time you buy all the primer and paint, and spend a few hours mucking about?, doesn't seem much more :)
