Mk4 /M5 starting problem

Postby tallboy1971 » Tue Apr 11, 2017 12:31 pm

Hi Guys n girls
I have a Mk4 autosleeper camper van. originally 2.0l petrol bu the previous owner has installed a 2.5l TD form a Mk5. When shes started she runs fine until i pull up and turn the engine off to re fuel etc then it struggles to turn over and start !! if i drop the jump leads onto the leisure battery she fires up. ive had a new battery new alternator new starter motor but problem still persists.
Also when stood over the winter period its a nightmare to get started ready for summer season. I have charged both the van batteries over night and bought a 87amp lorry battery from scrap yard to jump from but hardly even turning over. Cable to the starter is getting hot when trying too

Any ideas at where to start ?

Get the batteries "load tested" to make sure they're up to the jpb.
and
clean all battery leads/terminals.
especially earth leads.
could also be a lazy starter.

probably the petrol starter leads not being up to the job of starting a diesel...

Put a jump lead between the posative of the starter battery and where it connects on the starter, do the same with the other lead from earth to a good clean engine earth and see what happens ;)

Leads getting hot is a sure sign of either not man enough for the current draw, and/or dirty terminals.

Give them a good soak in Bakers Flux and the run some solder into the crimp, and all shall be well.

As Matt says, connecting jump leads between battery and starter terminals will confirm.

Most independant motor factors/garages will have a load tester.

Or
Halfrauds/Kwakfit do a free battery test.

If you were close I could do it :D

Hey welcome aboard Tallboy
On a very disturbing note your wiring is an Abortion A Fire waiting to happen please mate pull those batteries out and run brand new wiring and a decent dual battery mangement system that runs fuse breakers or at best some kind of Main cable postive fused system
before you even contimplate fixing the starting issue

Ok come across this before the main wiring from the postive terminal of the battery goes to the starter motor and alternator is crap change it
there is a thick red wire and a thinner red wire
go to your local Auto shop and get some 8 guage power cable around 1 meter long get both the wires red ones to one power ring terminal on one end and the other 2 split off to the starter motor an alernator make sure nice heavy duty ring terminals
remove throw away old wirring JOB done problem fixed
oh while your at it make sure all earths are the same guage coming from Negative terminal i make sure that i have three earths happening eg chasis motor body

other than that put a new battery in tighten all earths and put new heavy duty battery terminals on

cheers

That's not a turbo engine, that's a 76ps normally aspirated 'banana' engine (if it is from a mk5)
