LOCATION of camshaft position sensor

Postby Paddy2Lynch » Thu Apr 13, 2017 5:58 pm

After searching this and a few other forums....and getting a splitter of a headache.... I can't do much else than ask...

I have a Duratorq TDDI diesel Transit from 2003 (so not a common rail)
Where ,in the name of sanity, has Ford hidden the camshaft positioning sensor ?
I can not find this thing for love nor money !
In the TDCI's it is on top of the block, where you would expect it, but that isn't the case with the TDDI models.
Anybody who can throw some light on this, or has a picture of said part 'in situ' will be loved forever more !

Thanks guys

Paddy

I'm 99% certain that a TDDi doesn't have one, which could account for your blinding headache

Hopefully, someone who knows for sure will be along soon

If that is the case.... yeah.... you may have a point there !
It doesn't help my case though....
The engine starts up, idles for about 20 seconds and then dies..
This started out as being able to drive about 5 miles before this happened (no power, erratic rpm, anaemic idling followed by cutting out.
The day after that I could do 3 miles before this happened, and now it just idles rather 'square' for want of a better term and then cuts out.
I already changed the fuel filter, thinking I had water or dirt or both in the diesel, but no water or dirt is to be had.
It gave a EGC faultcode, but we've bypassed the EGC for now.
None of this made things better, actually things have become worse as you can read above...

Any suggestions, advise, or useful declarations are still highly appreciated

Cheers
Paddy

You really need to retrieve some fault codes, otherwise guessing will be expensive.

If it's FWD, there could be an issue with the fuel pump wiring, where it passes the starter motor

Thanks for your reply !
No, it is rear wheel drive, (which makes it hell to work on that engine !)
I will get the reader again , see what comes up and post the fault codes, but I can't do that before tomorrow !

Cheers & thanks

Ah ! thanks for that....
Would it be too much to expect that this one would be mounted ON or around the fuel pump ?

Cheers

No we haven't had the engine out yet (hope we can fix this without doing that)
The crankshaft sensor is simple enough to change, it can be reached from the top , as long as you can drape the ol' carcass far enough down the enginebay

Cheers

Is the crank sensor seated correctly? I believe if they are slightly out of line or not in enough they can cause issues.

Yes it is mounted according to instructions, in the right orientation, position and with the proper torque

Ok, for the gentleman who wanted to know the fault-codes/messages :

I only have the descriptions, not the actual numbers, as the guy that has the reader, only took the descriptions down :( after a reset and a restart, it doesn't seem to give any new fault codes, strangely enough )

First one was the EGR, but we have taken that out of play, so that has no bearing on the situation (and that would have been an easy fix...when did you know that to happen !)

The second was :"Injection time, deviation from the normative/normal/regular value"

The third one was " measuring unit pump : lessening of fuel amount (signal) "

The trouble is, that we can't change that pump sensor either, just to try ...as it can't be got at without taken the engine out ....

Sad as it may be, I may end up in a Ford dealership/garage and end up with a very flat wallet..... :(

Paddy, unhappy and missing his van.....

PS, we double checked, there is no cabling running over/ under the start motor... it runs behind it, well away from heat and appears to be undamaged
