Rattling noise when engine starts

Postby vampirequeen » Mon May 01, 2017 8:42 pm

When we start the van from cold the engine makes a sort of rattling noise but as soon as we set off the noise stops. Any ideas what it could be?

Van is a 2000 Mk6.

Thanks

Could be the cam chain guides and tensioner wanting attention. Mines doing the same for about 5 mins in the morning. N

No it just rattles when a cold start then straight away disappears. Doesn't happen if it's only been left a couple of hours. It's very odd.

Is this a noise which has just suddenly started happening???

Could be crank pulley, when they go duff they can clunk during start/stop...But your description definitely sounds like cam chain noise, the noise usually goes away when the oil pressure comes up...fairly common on machines with a few miles/age on 'em...methinks it best to get it sorted before it lets you down. If she jumps a tooth or three during a cold start before oil pressure comes up, you'll possibly be up for more damage....

Can you get someone who knows what they're doing to check it out for you??

The oil is correct.

I don't know anyone who can check so it will have to be a garage job. I guess the chain is an expensive job

Just thinking ....the noise started after we topped up the oil. Would it be worth changing the oil to see if that stops it?

Can't hurt...but I'd get it looked at by a good mechanic just to be safe.

Engine rattles and/or noises which are not the normal diesel type noises should at least be checked out....a rattling cam chain or other valve train issues can often become lethal to some engines.

If it sounds like a skeleton having a w*** in a biscuit tin for a few seconds when started from cold, but then quietens down then it's most likely the timing chain tensioner

Crank pulley is a rhythmic knocking noise that varys with engine speed, and is most noticeable at idle.
If it is the crank pulley then you will soon get confirmation when it splits into two pieces and throws the belt off

It seems to have stopped as quickly as it started. Very confusing. Now she just starts as normal with no rattling sound at all.
