hi guys

well :oops: :oops: all i know is the power steering belt which i think im looking at is only a small one on the right side of the engine as you look from the front, and then a larger belt on the left side of the engine is what was changed so i assumed that was the cam belt :oops: :oops: , but that is what was changed,

so as i said i know nothing but i only had the van 13 years so give me a break :roll:

hi guys,

i thought i already sent this but it seems i didn't !!! you are of coarse correct and me being a dick head did in fact think i was looking at the cam belt when in fact i was, as suggested, looking at the alternator belt;; so thanks guys for pointing that out; i assume the chain if it has jumped was due to wear of the chain or tensioner etc ? and it looks too big a job i think to tackle myself;

i am happy for the local garage to do this, but is there something that i could check in my limited knowledge , which would i'n fact' confirm this as the cause of the problem;??

it was mentioned earlier to look down the oil filler cap at the bolts to see if any are loose but i cant see anything; looking at the cover on top of the head, it looks like i would have to remove the injector pipes in order to get this off?? is that the case, or would i be better just to give the van to the garage and ask them to replace or check that the chain has jumped, which im sure you have suggested correctly;

if there is more damage, then i would probably not proceed if it ran over a 1000 euro; and plan to purchase another van;

and perhaps i could also ask for advice here on what to look for and what to avoid; i would have about 8k max to spend, but would like perhaps a trend or limited spec, with air con a must down here; around 2011/12, 115/125ps ,,,,,?? SO any advice would be greatly received but lets confirm the worst with the van first;

bob :(

You can check the timing chain by taking the timing chain cover off (the big metal plate the covers the entire side of the engine where the alternator belt is), it looks very tight and fiddly, once the chain is exposed you can rotate the engine to top dead centre and see if all the timing marked line up.

It might be best to find a friendly garage or mobile mechanic to do this if you are uncertain about doing it.

It'll be obvious if the timing has jumped. N

hi there,

yes that is what i will do think, and if it has slipped, is it still possible to have damaged other things, besides, as it drove home without any notice of a problem, so i assume it has slipped when or while i was starting it before the next journey ???

I believe they are more prone to jump from a cold start while the oil pressure is low, you might be lucky and only caused minimal damage, I believe valves usually survive but there might be some damage to the cam, they are repairable but its all dawn to garage costs.

By getting the timing marks checked on the chain will help decide whether that's the fault or not. N

Take the oil filler spout off not just the oil cap, then you can have a peer in for slack bolts, if bolts are loose then cam carrier has cracked in the threaded part...... Big problems

hi guys

well i have just removed the filler cap/tube and all i can see is the bolt directly below the filler but it is not loose, so does that give hope !!

i am wary that it no longer starts after coming out of the ford dealer, but i will see if the local indi garage can pick it up and check if the chain has jumped, they have already looked at the van before it went down the road to the dealers, but i guess they didn't think to check the timing !!

i will go visit and see what they say,

hi guys

just come back from garage, they will collect the van next week and check to see if the chain has in fact jumped and not caused any other damage?

we will see

hi guys

earlier in this post it was mentioned that the van would have gone into limp mode if i had a injector pump problem , which is a system i didnt even realise i had;; !! i have looked in the hand book and there seems to be no mention of the system, and would have thought it had a test l symbol light up upon starting but can say i have ever seen one ? can you advise if it is has a light to test :?: :?:

The coil light is the engine management light on mk6's if it flashes the van has detected an error and a fault code will be stored untill cleared using a code reader. N
