ignition

Postby WRussellE39 » Sun Jun 04, 2017 10:16 pm

hello all, i have a problem on my 1999 tourneo, when i switch off the ignition the engine keeps running i turn the ignition back on then off and the engine stops, it has a lucas epic pump, i am guessing this has something to do with the fuel shut off, also worried that this method will stop working and then how do you stop the engine short of trying to cut off the air, any help would be much appreciated.

If it's an EPIC pump, then you more than likely have a fault with the ESOS (Electronic Switch Off Solenoid) This will also put the van in limp home mode when it's running.
You can always stall the engine by engaging 5th gear and letting up the clutch (with the brakes on) but the ESOS needs sorting properly :(

thanks
for your reply, it has now gone into limp mode, i can't stall it as its an automatic, where is the esos? i presume its on the pump, the pumps are now obsolete so is it renewable do you know? p.s it is a lucas epic pump.

hello minor matt, i have found out which one is the esos and am wondering if this is repairable or even better still available for replacement? i had a problem with it before and the code said it was the cam position sensor, in your opinion would this have been the sensor at fault or the sensor indicating a pump fault,

Which code reader system did you use to get the fault code? Most won't communicate, and those that can usually give false codes - or rather false interpretations. Lucas Laser or Ford FDS the only reliable ones.

There is a cam ring sensor in the pump. Worn cambelt will be the usual cause for most 'timing' errors.

ESOS normally just gives pump control report fault - it knows there's a fault as the motor keeps running when it should shut down, the 'limp home' is the default engine/pump protection option.

Cam position sensor does cause limp home mode, however it won't cause the running on you describe. It is likely it is a historic code which hasn't been cleared

I still have plungers available as a replacement. Did you look at the link Altransit posted?
