Misbehaving Mk6

Postby Stoph » Mon Jun 19, 2017 2:55 pm

Afternoon all, sorry to start with a problem but I'm sure that's how most people end up on forums and then get hooked!
To cut a long story short.. Paramedic friend has a mobile dog grooming van based on a MK6, used it to fund her Paramedic training, once she finished the poor old van got a bit neglected and hasn't moved much in 12 months, it has been started regularly and driven round a small yard without issues but now its decided it doesn't want to play anymore.. its a 2.4TDci approx. 66k miles,
I got roped in as I sell second hand cars for a living (which in her eyes makes me 100% qualified to fix them to!).. About 6 weeks ago I went to visit and was turning over well on jump leads..battery had suffered with repeated attempts by owner.. but even with easy start ( Yes I know its horrible stuff but it might have worked!) best we could get was an occasional kick, plenty of fuel in the filter and cracked a union on the rail and fuel went everywhere so guess theres some pressure.. At this point with limited tools and standing in a field I was running short on options so had it recovered to a local garage.
Findings of garage were.. complete loss of compression on all cylinders.. they cant give me exact figures but approx. 100psi.. at this point they stopped investigating and told my friend that basically its scrap.. This didn't go down too well as only 2 years ago spent 15k having all the dog grooming salon grafted into the back..
I had hoped my involvement was over but it seems not! Having spoken to the garage today they admitted they don't really want the work of investigating further as it will clog up their workshop and they have too much on already, alright for some!
My initial thoughts having done a little reading on this lovely forum were timing related-- tensioner? fuel pump failure? or any combination of issues with the only way to find out properly to be to run some proper diagnostics and be step by step logical (Not convinced by current garage standards on this..!) As it was running fine 3 weeks prior it seems strange that it would just die whilst standing, there has been no attempt to start by towing btw, last service around 6k miles.
so now my friend has a large piece of garden furniture which is clogging up somebody elses forecourt space, as much as she doesn't want to she is going to have to spend some money on fixing it, a mobile dog grooming salon which refuses to be mobile isn't a great selling point!
Vehicle is located in Wallasey, CH41 Postcode, I guess what it needs as a start is timing checking and any associated damage if out along with fuel pressures/injectors all the usual stuff that causes non running.. Now I have seen complete recon engines advertised including fitting and collection for around £1800 but don't want to recommend that if its something less drastic..
I guess I'm looking for a recommendation of somebody who can sort it at a sensible cost, but without cutting corners as even though it will be sold once sorted it needs to be right..
Look forward to your thoughts and wisdom..

Stoph.. :D

Just thinking if it helps CH41 is Wallasey postcode so somewhere Birkenhead/Liverpool would be a good start!

Thanks

Mk6 2.4l 135ps tdci?

If so they are known for the timing chain to jump a tooth or three, this would tie in with no/low compression.

New timing chain, guides, tensioners and rocker ladder assembly required possibly a few more parts.

On a TDCI you really shouldn't crack the injectors as its a high pressure system (its also self bleeding)

Thanks NedForceOne.. yep its the 2.4 135 so if its known for it I guess that's a good place to start.. I'm still thinking that new chain/tensioner etc etc and a few other bits should come in cheaper than a new engine.. unless you tell me otherwise.. All I need now is a recommended good person to physically confirm/sort it!
When I said cracked an injector it was really just loosening a union on the rail  but I take your point..

recommendations for a decent place to get it sorted anyone Liverpool/Northwest area??

Thanks again.. looks like a likely answer.. now all I need is an individual who wants to earn some cash.. or a recommendation for a reputable place to get it sorted.. :)
