Split charge relay identification

Postby Portafold » Fri Jun 23, 2017 2:17 pm

Hello, I've got a 1990 AutoSleeper (Legend GL) based on a pre-smilie Mk3 Transit, but I can't identify what a lot of the under-bonnet wiring and relays are for.

I have a couple of questions so I'll separate them.

I'm trying to find the split charge relay which I've been told is on the bulkhead, but if I can identify all the bulkhead items I'd be in a lot better position to fix things in the future.

The near side bulkhead has a relay and two fuses:

The off side bulkhead has two relays with built-in fuses:

All the fuses are in good condition and the only thing that's not working on the whole van at the moment seems to the split-charge relay.

Thanks in advance.

You were correct. The one on the left used to make a connection (before it blew anyway) between the two batteries, doing the job of a split-charge relay. Not really up to the job in my opinion, so I'm replacing it and the wiring with much a better system.

The one on the right is the relay supplying 12 volts to the fridge (again it had blown) and not really up to the job so will be replaced with a proper relay designed for the job.

I'm also going to replace the snap-lock connector on the alternator trigger cable with a proper connection. Quite why AutoSleeper thought they were a good idea I don't know.

The yellow Ford relay on the near side bulkhead is for the solenoid on the automatic gearbox. The overdrive part so it has the fourth gear.
