Broken key/New key HELP PLEASE!

Postby MattHometown » Sun Jul 09, 2017 2:15 pm

Just bought my first transit, second-hand (55 plate). The metal part of the key has always been relatively loose, 285) a little bit of force you could twist it and it would twist when undoing the diesel cap, opening the door etc, now it's got to a point where if I put it in the ignition or diesel cap, door etc etc it just spins and spins. Tried gluing it as I was desperate to use it - worked once or twice but then the glue fails.

I'm getting a new key cut at Timpsons now (I've given them the key which is the blue chipped one? The master they said - I don't have any others), they said something that they program half the key there and then there's some sort of turning system I need to do with the master key and then the Newley cut key in the ignition, is this right and if so what do I have to do? I can't seem to find any details online?!?

Desperately need to get on the road today! Any help/advice would be much much appreciated. Thanks

Unfortunately, you can't program new keys unless you have two originals to start up the vans software program, but a decent locksmith should be able to clone the one that you have. There's no such thing as a master key, on a Mk6.
Alternatively, you could get a new key cut, and swap the chip from the key that you have

Ah right ok!! Just going off of what I was told by the guy from Timpsons - thanks for the correct info!!

How can I get the chip out of my currently messed up key? Is there any technique to do it? He cut me a key so I could open the doors and I am able to put the old chip into this new key but how would I go about getting it out of the old one?

Thanks again

You can always get a 2nd hand jag flip key and put the metal part of your key into it as well as the chip, Mr Punto did a how to with pictures and everything but thanks to photo bucket the pictures have gone.

I'll attach the link as you might understand it without pictures, I have done it and its fairly straight forward.
