Hi all
First off let me introduce myself by saying I am a builder and not a mechanic!
Looking for some advice on a 2006 Boxer (about 60k !!) . Last few years I have been taking it to a local garage which is a family friend and is great for servicing etc. The van has never run that great idles rough, poor mpg, white smoke on startup and was leaking what I though oil around the injectors. I asked the local guy what he thought it was and have had injector seals replaced, crankshaft sensor, glow plugs changed. Most of his answers were because I don’t do a lot of miles and only short journeys the engines probably clogged up ‘take it for a good run’. Whatever had been done never really seemed to improve anything but with being so busy with work I have never really had the time to take it off the road and have it sorted out.
There's a rather large oil pool on our concrete drive (which needs replacing when I get the time!!) and when it rains the water runs down onto the left hand side of the engine and leaves nice streaky oil (or diesel?) on roads etc.
A few weeks ago I decided to take it to a diesel specialist who I was sent to in the past to let them have a look at the list of problems. The rang me back within an hour and said there were 3 things that needed fixing and that the injector ends were burnt but could be repaired, apparently they weren’t refitted right before and not flush so it was making huge pressure in the top of the engine and forcing out the oil. So as well as the repair it had an egr bypass and a pressure regulating valve.
When I got the van back it did drive really nice, very smooth and good pick up almost like new. The next morning when I started it up it was bellowing out white smoke again when I opened the bonnet it was coming out of something in the engine I couldn’t see. As I rang the garage they asked how many miles I had done as the engine would need to ‘learn’ and if it wasn’t better in a week to take it back.
A week later and it still smokes a lot from cold if left over night or for a few hours in the daytime if left and I have noticed the oil is leaking from around the injectors again.
The van has been back into the garage and they have told me it will now need new injectors and seals to sort out the smoking and oil leakage.
Does this sound about right the first bill cost me 850 and they have estimated that the next lot of work will be around 1000.
Its not the money so much although I cant have it done for a week or so it is the time off road that costs me the most and I would just like it all sorting lol I know people have the same problem with unscrupulous builders taking them for a ride but this garage is very highly recommended and rated I just have no clue if what I being told is the right thing?
Many thanks in advance
