Crankshaft pulley, is it possible to bodge a repair?

Postby emanresu » Fri Jul 21, 2017 7:59 pm

Hi, 3 days in on a trip on the continent and the crankshaft pulley has completely torn away from the rubber around the central spindle. Just wondering if I can use some adhesive to stick it back on? In the van I've got got some high temperature RTV sealant (good up to 200c) and some sikaflex221(I think its good up to about 90c, flexible, and a really strong PU adhesive/sealant) --- perhaps one of these is up to the task??

They've got no chance of holding it together, sika is probably the strongest if you leave it long enough to cure but even thats a long shot

Some of the cheap new ones don't last long either, get genuine ford if possible, where exactly are you?!

Hi andz, thanks for the reply! I'm in Berlin. I'll give the sikaflex a go tomorrow.. i'm going to be parked up for few days, so no problem with a long cure time. Really want to avoid having to spend out if I can get away with it...

Knowing how efficient the Germans are I think I would rather payout and get a new one then be stranded on the side of the road somewhere. N

He will have even less money if it flys through the rad and intercooler and maybe take the fan out too  Even a cheapo will do to get him home

There's absolutely no hope in hell of bodging it using sikaflex or similar, it'll last exactly one revolution before it's sitting on the ground or in your radiator....there's a heluva lot of load and vibration going through them, let alone the belt load and tension.

A new one is the only answer....or possibly a known good one from a wreckers...!!

Thanks for the entertaining discussion, I do appreciate all the comments! Money is really tight at the moment, so that's why I was hopeful that a bodge might hold out. Seems like a trip to ford is inevitable, given the horrifying image of a smashed up radiator & intercooler, I won't risk a bodge! Checking the renewal procedure in haynes manual, it mentions removal of front right wheel --- is this necessary to get at the bolts?

I haven't done said procedure myself, but wouldn't removing the RHF wheel not be for a FWD motor?

Yep Al
RWD all you need is breaker bar 15mm socket and go under from radiator
No jacking needed
