2.4 diesel 350 high top mysterious overheating

Postby stevebaker » Thu Aug 10, 2017 5:59 am

Hi all
I am new to this, but will give it a try.
Ford transit 350 2.4 diesel on a 56 plate.
When it goes up hill or comes under load or have to high rev the temperature creep's up to the red sometimes to 120 and goes into limp mode.
Ok so first had it tested for head gasket.
Mechanic put 2 bottles of sealer in it. No change.
Changed the thermostate and housing as the spring behind the stat had broken. No change
Then changed the pump and vacuum pump and gasket. No change
Then changed the rad. Fan belt and tensioner. No change
Then changed the temperature sensor. No change
Then changed the oil cooler thermostate valve. No change
Then took the EGR cooler off and cleaned it out. No change
I have flushed the system both ways and changed all the coolant for new.
And changed the rad cap. No change
It only seems to get hot in the engine as I can take the cap off and it didn't seem to be that hot. But can hear bubbling in the block.
I am at my wits end over this and cant sleep please anyone help.

Sorry forgot to say I put some rad flush in and drove it for ten miles and dropped it out and put a hose through both ways.
Then filled with new long life coolant pure.
And changed the viscous coupling on the fan.
Had the fluids checked and pressure tested the system.
Then put on diagnosis machine and it comes up with no faults.
Please help at my wits End.
Cheers all steve

Check the wiring from the CHT sender back to the ECU.

Cht- cylinder head temperature sensor.

Transit temp gauge reads cylinder head temp not water temp. N

Did you fit a brand new water pump :?:

The symptoms you describe, normally points to the water pump.

+1 my waterpump was so buggered, once removed and shaken sounded like a bag of spanners, resulting in pretty much no coolant circulation

Do both the top and bottom radiator hoses get warm/hot??

Aftermarket pump should be fine...have had one on my Mk7 2.4 for over 2 years without issue.

Ah but don't rule out the water pump, new parts can fail.

any oil in your water? Also, have you taken the out pipe off the water pump and got someone to turn it over make sure coolants pumping out as it should? Might sound silly but did you put the heater on full heat when you filled up with coolant?

Short journey and lower hose staying cold/cool is normal.

I would try running it without the thermostat and see if/when it gets hot, that the bottom hose is also hot :!:
