how to make headlights ignition fed on mk6

Postby the dutch guy » Tue Aug 15, 2017 7:39 am

i am used to italian cars that have the headlight switched with the ignition so you can leave the light switch on.
ford in all it's wisdom found it better to just install a highly annoying buzzer that works as soon as you open the door, even if the engine is running.

how can i change the wiring to make the light switch ignition fed so i can rip that buzzer out, drive a tank over it and blow up what is left after that? (this is no joke)

Wire headlight switched feed direct to a switched live.

Then stock up on the bulbs you will be changing every few weeks 'cos they've gone dim and yellow á la Euro 5 vehicles. Or just don't drive at night.

Bit of tape over the buzzer vents helps reduce the deafening din to a more acceptable level.

i have driven cars with ignition switched lights for more then 20 years and never noticed them going bad from being always on.
this is my first time with a vehicle that has them always on and i discoverd that i find this extremely annoying.
i would rather solve this problem at it's core.

is there a wire schematic of the mk6 somewere?

You can just remove the lights on warning buzzer, its separate on a mk6. or rather than risking flattening your battery with no buzzer, (and fitting dozens of sidelight lamps every year by having the lights on all the time with the ignition), put a relay in the buzzer feed so it only works when engine is Off, not while the engine is running (that's what I did with mine, so don't get that annoying BBBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIIIEEIIEEIIEEIIP if I open the door to see what's beside/behind me better while I'm reversing.

I dont have sidelights and am working on replacing all regular bulbs with leds (the ones that are reliable) and modify the headlights with a xenon lens kit. I dont have to worry about breaking lights.

As the main beams do turn off as you turn the ignition off it is logical that it would only require a simple cut and split of a wire going into the headlight switch. Or is this behavour controlled by a computer?

No computer on a mk6

I'd just cut the main feed and wire a simple relay. :D

I did like this on my wee punto, just left them on all the time.

the final solution to this problem and got this down to 15 minutes:

remove the steering collum shroud, remove tunnel of the dials (have fun with the 2 lower screws) and remove the 3 screws holding the entire panel and take it out, grab the big plug:

Image

cut the orange/yellow thick one (3rd from the left-front row) and cut it 7cm back from the plug. do the same with the green/yellow (1rst from the right-back row)

hook up the plug side orange/yellow one with both ends of the green/yellow one and made a solid connection. and tape it up and insulate the loose orange/yellow wire left as well, there is a bare metal bar right behind the plug.

then it should look like this:

now dive under the dash right above the brake pedal is a white relay, remove it and sacrifce it to the blood gods.... or toss it in the bin.

congrats, your lights will now be switched on or off with the ignition. this should work with all models with the same model light switch.

The green and yellow looks a bit thinner than the orange?
