Spraying the Underside to protect it from Rust

Postby bclg » Mon Aug 21, 2017 10:17 pm

I was going to spray the underside of my 2007 SWB Transit with Waste Oil is this a good or a bad idea.

What would I need to thin the Oil with to allow me to spray it with a Garden Pressure Sprayer?

I've used waxoil on my van on the outside underneath on top of the Ford under seal but in the inside of the chassis and xmembers I sprayed waxoil in and when I've done a oil change I have also sprayed the waste oil in while still hot downside is the mess on the drive afterwards as excess drips out .
Has for been silly useing waste oil that's what was used for years before waxoil came on the market

To be fair Shultz does not stop rust it just covers it up and traps in the rust

I cleaned the underside of my van and all arches back to good clean metal.

No mud
No oil or grease
Remove any loose flaking material

i then applied a rust proof primer, then used hammerite underseal with added waxoil, jobs a good 'un

i wouldn't... used engine oil can be pretty acidic (even heard of some people mixing it up with diesel - even worse  )

Proper prep work, cut out rot, put new steel in and treat the rest. I did a shed load of welding last MOT and there's not even a bubble of rust since i've treated it all. If you leave rot and cover it up it spreads underneath whichever sealer/underseal you use :(

Same as even me floor Wells leak oil when parked up

But I'm a diesel fitter so if oil spils in me van I leave it to find it's own way out :D I have even drilled holes in the back of the van so the oil runs under the wooden floor and when I look underneath I can see the oil coming threw places you carnt get to Happy days

At work when I was a apprentice plant fitter we had a H reg transit service van the gear oil pump was strapped on the o/s/r corner of the van and it spilled a lot of oil so underneath was covered in gear oil when the van was scraped the rest of the van was rotten but the o/s/r was like new in the new N reg van that replaced it we had a tray made up to put the oil cans in so it did not get the same amount of oil spilt in it it rotted everywhere you can't beat a bit of oil to hold back the rust
