IDS Power Balance Test - Missing?

Postby grogan197 » Mon Sep 04, 2017 11:58 am

I want to run a power balance test on my 2006 MK6 as it's got a knock under acceleration so I want to see if a power balance test picks up anything. When I connect with IDS and look under the powertrain heading I only get options for 'fuel' , 'engine checks, & 'asm service functions'. I was expecting to see a few more like power balance, relative compression, etc

I'm using IDS v86.0, do I need a more up to date IDS? Or is it that I am doing something wrong / van not compatible?

The van most likely doesn't have the required sensors on the engine to run all those tests

As far as I am aware, but could easily be wrong the test uses the crankshaft sensor to access the power being contributed by each cylinder. So the shaft would slow slightly if a cylinder was not contributing an equal share of power.

The van is still on an older PCM software, I haven't tried an update yet as I haven't been able to verify that my VCX Nano is genuine and therefore capable of writing to the ECU and not just wiping it. I wonder if a software update would give more diagnostic options in IDS?

What ake said...I don't think the Mk6's are capable of what you're after...

You mention older PCM software...are you sure you have a Mk6..?? 2006 was the "changeover" year.

Yeah it's definitely a MK6. I have an early MK7 too and don't have the option of power balance on there either.

Looking on the forum I have found a post of the test being done on a 2002 mk6, that was a tddi though so unless the power balance test is a tddi only thing? Mine are both tdci's

On IDS it does say there is a software update and that the newer PCM software has additional diagnostic PID's so I there's a good chance that IDS needs the additional PID's to perform the power balance test. I tried the update but I keep getting a FEPS error which looks like it is down to the unit I bought been a bad clone so need to look at getting a replacement.

Well I now have another VCM Nano which also doesn't work :(

The second one seems worse than the first actually as it report the OBD voltage wrongly at 6v so won't even get close to doing module programming as IDS says low batt.

It looks like the power balance test is certainly possible with this van as nedforceone has the required CYL_Ratio PID's on his 125 Mk6 so I'm guessing his PCM is running the software update.

Hi Grogan!

I appreciate it's been a while now but did you ever manage to run the power balance test.

I've just updated my mk7 to the latest pcm firmware (using a vcx nano) and still no power balance test option.
