Which tyres?

Postby davidcopperfield11 » Mon Sep 11, 2017 9:02 am

Hey folks,
I have a mk6 Ford Transit Jumbo (camper conversion) but it has Bridgestone 185/75r16 on and not 215s. Question is can I swap them for the 215s on that rim?

Thanks Image

215/65 R16 are only +0.3% different.

Use this calculator/converter here:

https://www.oponeo.co.uk/advice-and-tips/tyre-size-calculator/185-75-r16#alternativeTireTool

Just put your tyre size in the drop down boxes just under the "Alternatives for your car" heading, and click the orange "search for alternatives" box.

I had my Mk7 SWB camper fail it's MOT on a damaged tyre a few weeks ago, with a "just legal" advisory on a two more so I had to bite the bullet and buy four new tyres.

It had 195/70 R15 tyres on it - I used that calculator and checked out alternative sizes but ended up buying the same size as they were quite a bit cheaper.

I wanted all year tyres and In the end I ordered some Nokian Weatherproof C from Mytres https://www.mytyres.co.uk/ as they were £30 cheaper per trye than anywhere I could get locally. I would happily recommend Mytres but be aware that they ship from Germany so delivery will take a week. They have a list of approved fitters nationwide, and I got them fitted from one of their affiliate fitters just half a mile from me for ten quid per trye.

Make sure you get the correct 114/116 load rating.

215/75s will make a noticable difference.

Check the rim widths too, Jumbos came with both 5 1/2" and 6 1/2".

Hi,
I tend to agree with Jim. As 215/75s will make a difference. So you should check everything properly beforehand.
As for the shops, I upvote for http://www.mytyres.co.uk/ too. Their service is good enough. One more worth mentioning is http://www.tyres-outlet.co.uk/. They delivered me my new Conti in time and for an acceptable price.

Let us know then what you've decided

185's were fitted to the fwd mk7s, that's probably where the wheels originated.

There is no reason you can't change them for wider ones.

I have identical rims on my 2012 Ford Nugget. As far as I know, the are 5.5Jx16 ET56 rims. The original tyres for this camper van are 205/65 R16C. The 205 tyres are already pretty wide for a 5.5" rim, according to what I can find on the internet, e.g. here. I would hesitate to fit 215 tyres.

Ford spec 215s on 5.5" rims for the Mk7 Jumbo. My Mk6 had 6.5".

I went for Firestone VanHawk tyres in the end. A Bridgestone brand but £40 cheaper per rim (x4) than the CPs I would have preferred. Normally from National but they couldn't get all 4.

Tyres on the drive did mine for a few quid more but had all four the next day and sitting at home with a cuppa was far nicer that a fitting shop waiting room for a couple of hours.

If playing around with profiles Tyresafe have a pressure calculator to give you your new starting point.

Seems a minefield. If they are 5.5J rims as Ronald says then that's the rim that's recommended with 215s on. The 185s don't meet the load rating. Is this checked on mot? It'll still be class 7 as not had it registered yet as a camper.

3 points and £60 per tyre is it still if there not the right ones?
That's only 12 points and £240 :P
