Transit mk6 2.4 rwd starting issues

Postby Treppo » Tue Sep 26, 2017 8:23 pm

Hi,

I've recently had an issue with the starter getting lazy till it finally stopped. I have now replaced this but now it won't run, it has never failed to start before even when turning over not so well.

So I have tried in desperation to bump start when the starter failed.

Replaced the starter the day after (today).

And now it will not run....

I have checked for fuel at injectors, have checked not disturbed wiring I.e the feed and other live to starter is connected, cranksensor hasn't been disturbed/unplugged.

Have checked fuses in both boxes.

Have filled up day before but no reports yet of bad fuel from the garage

Have also towed to start for a coupe of miles intermittently but no luck....

Thoughts now are snapped cam or jumped timing chain?

Anyone had similar problems???

Thanks

Robb

Please "do not" bump start your transit....they can often have a tendency to jump teeth on the cam timing causing more grief than you already have.

If you do desperately have to tow start them, put them in 3rd gear and tow from a dead stop so there's no "sudden" hit from dropping the clutch. They need oil pressure to keep tension on the chain, the sudden jolt/shock from dumping the clutch on a bump or tow start with no oil pressure may cause them to jump teeth.

Have you looked down the oil filler to see if the rocker ladder is cracked or broken or the bolts have been pulled..??

Have you perchance had the codes read??

Hi,

Small update....

Looks ok through filler cap, have had timing cover off and timing is spot on.

Will be checking codes and running up on brake cleaner to confirm engine is still ok.

It seems like a sensor isn't receiving so not allowing to start or immobiliser issues, any pointers to look out for?

Thanks

Those two codes certainly point to pump issues...

P1664 = Injection pump module faulty
P1564 = Injection Pump Control Module Request More Fuel

Unfortunately they have been known to just up and die suddenly....but worth checking the wiring to/from pump at least.

Hi,

Yes thanks for the reply, we have checked wiring to pump and have live and earth and continuity between pump plug and plug by fuse box.

Although I only changed the starter after it died and tried a bump start we are also in agreement that the pump has failed.

My last transit died of fuel pump problems, so annoying, haven't yet come across a Perkins engine fail because of fuel pump which looks identical...

It could just be the electronic part of the pump, they can be removed and sent off for repair, some one here have had theirs repairs and its worked well. N
