Mk7 tdci intermittent starting issues

Postby Arthurfron01 » Wed Sep 27, 2017 8:19 pm

Hi all,
Have not been on here for a while,so I thought a new post was the way
Right van has been going good for a while,
The only slight problem was an oil leek on crankshaft seal,
Anyway last week the clutch started slipping and burning smell, eventually three days after warning the clutch failed completely, while waiting for RAC engine would not start, after towing to mechanic, would not start,I filled filter with diesel and started easy, since having van back, sometimes won't start till I fill filter, then starts, has cut out couple of times sometimes trouble starting, ever time I check filter its empty, any ideas,?,I was wondering could it be crank sensor oiled up off oil leek, thanks in advance

If it's fwd check fuel pipe from filter to pump , where it curls by rubber water hoses and sometimes the rubber hose actually rubs through the hard plastic fuel pipe and cause rubber pipe is sitting on the plastic pipe it blocks the the hole most of the time so seems intermittent

Thanks for reply,
I don't think its that
I have replaced that original pipe with a reinforced fuel pipe

Certainly sounds like air getting in, have a check of the leak-back pipes on the injectors. Also check the filter head hose connections.....and the filter head itself, they've been known to crack causing the same issues...!

Solid reinforced pipe ?? If its rubber with hose clips they have a habit of spitting at hose clip, if its clear braided plastic fuel pipe they go brittle and dont seal properly
Other thing with you having clutch problems have you checked the crank sensor it maybe covered with metal filings and crap and make sure it goes in far enough if you have it out to check

Andz327,
Will look into crank sensor tomorrow,
Do you think it would have this symptoms,
I just think its strange that it would not start after clutch stopped working

Yep...As andz327 says...if your DMF starts falling to pieces....all the metal and crud ends up on the crank sensor rendering it pretty much useless...but it's just a suggestion....costs nothing to whip it out to check though..!

WELL PEOPLE,HERE IS THE LATEST IN THE SAGA,
I HAVE BEEN STARTING THIS VAN ON THE SECOND ATTEMPT MOST TIMES RECENTLY,
GAVE IT A 20 MILE TRIP YESTERDAY,AFTER IDLING FOR A FEW MINUTES,IN THECENTRE OF THE NEXT TOWN,
THE VEHICLE REVVED OUT OF CONTROL,LUCKILY THE ROAD WAS EMPTY,
BLACK SMOKE FILLING THE STREET,
AFTER GETTING OVER THE SHOCK,IT TURNED OVER ,AFTER ANOTHER ATTEMPT,WOULD NOT TURN
GOT RECOVERY HOME,TRIED JUMP LEADS ON THIS MORNING,STARTED WITH NO HASSLE,
SO NOW I AM A BIT SCARED OF USING IT,PUT A NEW CLUCTH TWO WEEKS AGO,MOT THREE WEEKS AGO,
I THINK THE BEST OPTION FOR ME IS TO SELL AS IS,ITS A SHAME REALLY ITS A TIDY VAN,

For fooked engine price dont you mean

Engine reving it's t!ts off and you have to stall van to stop can it running ?? If thats what happened then a few things could probably cause it, but most common arr ......some numpty has poured 10ltrs of oil into engine or turbo impeller has fooked and dumped oil into the cylinders...... Outcome of both are much the same as at this point the engine is using oil as fuel and stuff like pistons start melting due temperatures and high max revs........long story short .......engine is fooked,
Using easy start can also fook up the engine if you use to much to often
