Ticking noise

Postby Martinw » Thu Sep 28, 2017 8:19 pm

Hi guys. Just wondered if anyone has any ideas on this one...

I've hot a mk7 2.2 fwd transit 2011 115, it's done 207k miles. Was getting revs surging on tickover and a diesel knock especially when cold so rather than mess about I took it to ford at chesterfield (transit specialist). They had it over night and did diagnostic. Result was injector 2 was overfueling and all injectors were out of sync so they put that right but said it needed a new injector but they are expensive from us at nearly £600 for one! I took it to a injector specialist and they replaced injector 2 and said it will more thank likely need the other 3 replacing. Van run lovely for a few days, the revs surging has gone altogether but the engine still sounds noisy when cold but quietens down when up to temperature.

Then I noticed a slight tickng when engine was ideling. This got loader so I took it back to injector place today as it sounded knackered (a bit like a knackered cam shaft sound on an old Vauxhall cavalier). He said it doesn't sound like an injector it sounds metallic? Which it did... but to check anyway he took all the injectors out and tested them, and although the new one, injector 2 had a better reading than the others he said the others weren't that bad or enough to make it run bad. He cleaned all the pipes and we checked under the rocker cover which he said looked nice and clean and couldn't see anything damaged or anything worn. He said I'll put the injectors back in but swap them round, so now new injector 2 is now number 4 as number 4 was the worsted reading. Fired it up and the ticking/knocking had gone! So to me this rules out the engine being completely knackered as it sounded sweet. But, I've noticed it's started ticking again slightly after 20miles or so, so no doubt it'll get louder....

Any one any idea what this is? Or is it just the other injectors that all need changing?

Thanks guys.

When the injector specialist swapped the injectors around did they put new copper washer in the injectors and did they use new injector clamp bolts? I believe they are 1 use stretch bolts.

My thinking is if they have re used the bolts the injectors might be dancing up n down slightly, causing the ticking noise, I could be totally wrong though. N

What Ned said....! Injector clamp bolts are single use, also the copper washers need to be new and their seats in the head need to be clean and undamaged....or you'll eventually be doing it again..!

Could even be a slight exhaust manifold leak causing the ticking noise....only does it when warmed up..!!?? Check for signs of soot/leakage on the exhaust port/manifold interface and manifold/turbo interface.

He defo did a lot of cleaning and had a handle with some sort of long shaft on it all the way in the injector hole turning it... no idea. I'll check.

If he swapped the injectors round he would have recoded them to the ECU. When this happens the ECU doesn't do pilot injection for a while after until it learns the new injectors. It maybe that the ticking came back when the ECU started doing pilot injection again.

Would it be wise to change the other 3?

Obviously I don't want to spend money where it's not needed but the new injector outperformed the other 3,
number 4 injector being the worst. Could this cause the problem?

The engine is also noisier too when cold. When temperature gets up it goes quiet.

I have 2 transit customs both 170 bhp 1 of them has 167k miles has just had new crank pulley and new timing belt fitted but still has an annoying ticking sound once warm. The second vehicle is an MSRT with 12k and does exactly the same both vehicles are 2017 models. Not sure what it can be.

Thread is 4 years old and you have totally different animals, yours are Mk8 and Euro-6...the one in question above a Mk7 Euro-4....different vehicles, different engines.
