Mk3 brake drums, Haynes wrong?

Postby GBW » Mon Oct 09, 2017 12:05 pm

On our annual trip to the Southampton Boat Show, the brake pedal suddenly started travelling much further than usual. During a week's stay in a car park, it recovered then the fault returned.

Front brakes seem fine. Consulting the book, rear brakes seem a nightmare. Do you really have to remove the hub?

Mine is a six wheeler and there are scrape marks over the hub implying the drum has been removed over it.

What is the truth? Do the shoes self adjust or is it necessary to back off the adjustment first? So far the drum has failed to shift.

I have yet to understand and examine the load-adjust mechanism.

I assume you are talking about twin rear wheel axle the drums are very difficult to get off the hubs it’s better to take off hub and drum as a unit remove the halfshaft then bend the lock tab back to get a socket on the first nut undo nut one side of van maybe left hand thread then remove lock tab and undo the rear nut if you can wobble the hub to get the outer bearing out then what I do next is bolt the halfshaft back on the wrong way round and use it as a lever by wobbling up and down and pulling at the same time.doing it this way you may damage the springs holding the shoes on if there is a big lip on the drums with it being a mk3 the springs will be getting week I have used this method on Hgv s as well as transit vans if you are not replacing the hub seals don’t let the hub/drum asa fall off the shoes and hit the axle tube

There's usually bugger all chance of getting the drum off on it's own, it's quicker to do what's described above rather than risk destroying something. One day I will get mine to come off normally but I have a feeling it's going to require extensive use of oxy acetylene to get it to shift.
