Rip out all computers and convert to full mechanical?

Postby sjmcl » Fri Oct 20, 2017 11:18 pm

I've got a 2002 Transit 350L, 2.4 DuraTorq D1 diesel, engine D2FA. Is it possible to rip out all computers and convert this to a full mechanical van?

I did this to my old 1996 Transit, because it continuously went into limp mode for no apparent reason. I replaced the EPIC fuel injection pump with a mechanical Bosh pump, and ripped out the PATS. After that it went absolutely perfect, plenty of power, good fuel economy and very reliable. It was the best thing I ever did to it.

But, can this be done to these newer Transits as well? Or is the computer too embedded in the whole van?

Like Karl says anything is possible but it'll be hard work, new loom, manual pump and throttle cable ect, the speedo might be a problem though. N

With my 1996 Transit I simply disconnected the electrical connections to the fuel pump but left the loom in place.

I replaced the EPIC fuel pump with a Bosh pump and installed a mechanical throttle pedal and cable. It wasn't that hard, and certainly worth the effort.

So the question I have with this Transit boils down to this : does the computer control anything else besides the fuel pump and ASM gearbox? I couldn't care less about the PATS as I have no need for it.

Yes, old fashioned display with dials and mechanical odometer.

My question is why?

Does the van run ok as it is?
If so leave it alone, the rust will kill it before the engine dies!

Computers are the enemy
One day they will enslave you humans 8)
And if converting a digital van to analog will stop them then do it

Apparently ford supplied mk6 vans to some third world countries with a manual pump?

Someone was looking into it, but then it all went quiet.
