Inner rear wheel arch modification

Postby john200 » Wed Nov 01, 2017 1:17 am

Hi everyone,
I've just started converting my 2013 custom ltd swb to a day van / camper.
First problem I've encountered is that the inner rear wheel arches are too high for what I want to do with seating. Don't want to go over the top of them as that would reduce the headroom too much (I'm tall).
My question is.. if I cut the top of the arch off, fabricate a new one and weld it back 6cm lower, will that have an impact on the MOT or anything else?
Looks like there's plenty of clearance for the tyre, and obviously the new arch would have smooth curves and no sharp edges.
Cheers

From an MOT perspective as long as it's seam welded it's fine. You might want to check where the wheel can move to under full articulation - one wheel fully up and one fully down. Ford wouldn't make them bigger than they need to be for no reason

Thanks for your reply. I'll jack the van up on the other side and check the clearance before I get the grinder out.

Don’t forget that as you build the van even a day van will get heavier as you build it and sursepention will drop how much clearance will you have when it’s on the bumpstops

Yep...easiest way is to jack her up, disconnect the leaf springs at the rear hanger...then slowly lower it to the bump stop to see how far the tyre travels into the inner guard, then make your inners to suit..!
