FWD and RWD MK7 height difference

Postby tb2000 » Wed Nov 08, 2017 5:59 pm

Recently I was in a situation where I could've done with even more height inside my med roof van, which could happen again. I was wondering about the high top Transit, as in is there any difference in the internal height between the FWD and RWD? I know the floor is a bit higher up on the RWD to accommodate the prop and diff etc, but did Ford make the top that bit higher or do you lose a bit of height over the FWD?

Cheers all!

All versions of FWD have more internal height than their RWD counterparts

Ok thanks for the reply. I'll be looking for a FWD hightop at some point then! Luckily I don't really need towing capability (highly unlikely to ever need it), even so I think the FWD T350 can tow 2 ton anyhow. I would expect FWD T350's (or anything over T300) are harder to find than RWD versions!

Out of interest do you know what the height difference is? Is it just the step difference (which appears to be about 4 or 5 inches)?

Cheers :)

Yep...the FWD's have ~4" more head-room than their RWD equivalent. I'm 6' tall and can stand up straight in my RWD LWB HR...with ~1" to spare.... so a FWD HR could handle a chap or chappette ~6'4".

So the big question is, is the T350 FWD a 2.2L? (mk7). N

  Oh yeah didn't think like that, at least the op can search 2.2L 350 to find what he/she needs  N

Sadly, the Euro 5's are all 2.2 litre, FWD & RWD  :)

Thanks all! Yeah I was guessing it was probably the same height inside minus the bit for the raised floor, but I thought there was a small chance Ford might've altered the roof to make it the same dimensions inside. Presumably that would've required all manner of different panels altering though!

If/when I go for one it'll probably be at least a T300 (more likely a T330 or T350, although this does make the MOT a bit more expensive!), shame they don't do bigger than the 2.2 in FWD but i'd try to find a 140bhp version same as my T280 MWB med roof van I have now. It goes well enough for me! :)

If you have a fwd just now, its the height difference between cab area and cargo area(part where bulkhead bolts on )

You don't need any bigger in fwd, I've a 130 lwb/med roof 300 and powers great, and very economical with 40+ mpg even when I'm towing and can get 47mpg if I'm running on cruise at 60mph (56mph on nav), was watching a jumbo twin wheeler on ebay and message the guy about mpg as i could get more towing work with the big guy but he said £20 only gets him 45mls.....fook that

You get better diff ratios in the fwd when you find one
