MK5 Transit wont start

Postby gptfytsm » Sat Nov 18, 2017 6:27 am

Only got this transit a couple of weeks ago, 1998 Mk5, was told that it sometimes has trouble starting up.
Tried to start it a couple of days ago, and it just cranked without starting. I pulled the battery out to charge it up. Put it back in today, and now it wont even turn over.

Key in, turn it to on, battery light, oil light and coil light come on, wait until the coil light starts flashing, turn key to start, exclamation mark light comes on, and ... just nothing. When the key is released, it cannot be turned back to the start position again without turning it back to the off position first.

Checked all the fuses in the drivers side foot well, all are OK. Any ideas?

Just cleaned and sanded off battery terminals and connectors, and made sure they are tight, still the same.

I just tried to test the other fuses in the battery junction box next to the battery, the first fuse pulled out and tested OK, the second one broke when I pulled it out, so guess I have to get another one of them. It's a 60A, https://i.imgur.com/TF7lVSP.jpg I think it should have the terminals that broke off, and Ill have to pull them out of the fuse box (I assume theses fuses should just pull out!?)

I think I screwed up, this large fuse was a male type, and look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXZwN70fuIs seems maybe they need to be unbolted, whoops.

Turbo Diesel? The exclaimation mark light is the engine check warning.

Non turbo. Strange, because was working before removing / putting back battery. Are there error codes or how can I diagnose the exclamation light?

So this is a non-turbo di diesel :?:

It has no engine lights, no heater plugs, nothing electronic to get codes from, except for the immobiliser, which should be a flashing red LED in the dash, (or headlining maybe :!: )
The immobiliser LED, which is normally flashing slowly when at rest, should light up when you turn on ignition, and then go out, before it will start.
If it's flashing fast, then you have an immobiliser issue :)

Yip it's a 2.5 Di Banana https://i.imgur.com/pHVofWM.jpg https://i.imgur.com/LamLQ3o.jpg
It has a LED in the headlining, it flashes slowly on and off, and then when ignition is turned on, goes solid for ~2 seconds then turns off https://i.imgur.com/ocxt6sy.jpg (is this
aftermarket? I never got had any immobiliser remote or anything)
Here is the cluster when ignition turned to on https://i.imgur.com/mywhuRd.jpg and when turned to start https://i.imgur.com/aTSnwX4.jpg
On an unrelated note, there is this loose cable on the left side of the engine, it was never plugged into anything not sure whats it's for https://i.imgur.com/epqI7Ax.jpg

OK, reading up, looks like its the PATS rather than aftermarket, but also that it seems to be working OK based on the LED (I wrapped the key in tin foil, and the led flashed out the code '13' 'No Key Code Received'). It would be nice to remove the PATS all together, as I only got one key with the van, but that seems complicated.

Hadn't taken notice of the LED, but thinking maybe the PATS had something to do with the engine not starting previously if it stops the pump working(?)

Regardless, I can't even get it to crank at the moment.

Are you getting 12v at the starter solenoid wire when you try to crank?

That's working exactly as it should, so that can't be your issue here :)

Does it crank if you bridge the main starter motor terminals? If so, what if you feed 12V to the solenoid signal terminal?

There is a fusible link built into 1 of the leads going to the battery (cannot remember if +or - ) might be worth checking with a multimeter

Well, I feel like an idiot for not seeing this before, but also not sure when this happened between it working, taking the battery out and putting it back in. Maybe the fresh charged battery had enough juice to finish the job.

Starter positive has shorted right through the insulation on the negative! https://i.imgur.com/ma5owFY.jpg
Assume it should not look like this https://i.imgur.com/2KR9ld7.jpg lol #notamechanic

Have to test the starter probably get a new one :/
