Mk6 RWD 6-speed reverse light switch fault

Postby chaudio » Sat Dec 09, 2017 8:30 pm

Hi, my first time posting a question, hopefully someone might be able to help please.

I have a Mk6 Transit with the 6 speed RWD gearbox. For a while I've had issues with intermittent reversing light operation. When they finally stopped working altogether I sourced a replacement switch and verified that the lights worked when the switch was operated manually. As an aside, it turns out there are two different switches with different mounting threads which are listed by the parts suppliers for this vehicle and of course I got the wrong one first time. Anyway, it turns out that my reversing lights still don't work, or only very rarely. All I can assume is that whatever actuates the switch inside the gearbox is not doing so correctly.

Has anyone else come up against this issue? My current thought is to buy another switch, stick it in a lathe and extend the thread so that it screws deeper into the gearbox in the hope that will cure it. Failing that I'll be fitting a manual switch on the dashboard instead!

They only list one switch for the MT82 box, #5 here:

Which is the same switch for the Mk7 up to 3/6/2011

Might order another one then, try to get an original and see how that goes. I'm guessing it must just be marginal on the activation.

Any updates? Having similar issues with intermittant reverse lights on the 6speed. Seemed to work with jiggling the gearknob but has since stopped altogether.

"chaudio" hasn't been back here since Dec 2017...so we'll never know.

Reverse light switch as dumper said is the common "go to". I've had to replace mine too a couple of years ago. Pop the two wires off the switch, turn the ignition on, short the two wires together, if the reverse lights come on, it's the switch at fault....if not, you have a wiring fault.

I still get email notifications though and I still own the van too!

In the end having gone through intermittent activation to almost continual activation under certain temperature conditions with a different switch (which was slightly disturbing for traffic following me when my LED reverse lights started strobing on one journey), I ended up fixing it by taking one of the two switches I ordered and turning down the body on a lathe until it engaged the correct amount into the gearbox. Now been fine for the last six years or so.

Don't ask me to remember which switches I bought though sorry!
